  • Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Memoir Writing, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this workshop, participants will deepen their character work and learn how to craft a compelling memoir scene complete with description, details and dialogue that will bring the written word to life. A deeper understanding of the two voices of memoir will be explored; the voice of innocence and the voice of experience. Participants will gain a strong understanding of how and when to create real, conversational dialogue and utilize flashbacks. Tools to communicate clarity of character will be taught to bring the people in the story to life for the reader. Participants will be encouraged to submit another chapter of their work for peer review. (Those following the certificate program will have 3-5 chapters written by the end of this class.) Class structure: Except for the first class, the first hour will be lecture and the second hour will be read and critique where participants can workshop their material or class assignments. Tone of class: We strive to create a supportive, nurturing environment where participants feel encouraged to share, risk and connect to their most creative self. Our textbook, 7 Essential Writing Tools, is available for purchase on the first day of class for $10 or on Amazon/Kindle. Note: There will be no class on April 1! Certificate Discount If you buy all five of the workshops in the certificate separately, the total cost amounts to $1,296. • Join Alex Steed and Woody Shticks for a funny evening of stories about lovable (and sometimes not-so-lovable) losers. In a world full of redemption arcs and revised narratives, we remain heartened by all of the resonant losers and bad-luckers that history has forgotten. With some slides and a lot of good humor, we are eager to share some of our favorites with a live audience. Alex will tell Woody about a bad-lucker from his profession, Woody will tell Alex about a bad-lucker from his. Think live podcast, minus the podcast, plus the PowerPoint. Alex is a writer, a producer and podcast host (You Are Good). Woody is a comic, a stripper and a queer archivist and historian. There will be plenty of slides and a whole lot of jokes.

  • From the organizers: The San Diego Early Music Society welcomes back Concerto Köln, a long-time favorite of San Diego audiences. This season, they return with renowned Trinidadian soprano Jeanine De Bique to present "Mirrors," a program of arias by Handel, Graun, Riccardo Broschi and others, exploring how the same opera heroine such as Cleopatra, Rodelinda, and Alcina, might be differently conceived by major Baroque composers. The program is titled after their 2021 album that was enthusiastically received by critics and the public. Jeanine De Bique has been praised for her “dramatic presence and versatility (Washington Post) and “sheer, endless wealth of color and nuances… [and] free-floating timbre” (Opernwelt).
