  • The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP), the oldest all-girls Catholic high school in San Diego County, will be holding the Ninth Annual Women’s Symposium on Friday, March 24 from 7:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at OLP’s campus (4860 Oregon Street, San Diego, CA 92116). Modeled after the speaker panels at leading universities, OLP’s Women’s Symposium brings together top women leaders to share their insight and pathways to success with students and the community. This year’s theme, “The Hope is Here”, congregates women leaders and students to partner in the hope of being the change the world needs today. Open to the public, from high school students to seasoned business professionals, the 2023 OLP Women’s Symposium features a series of workshops and highly curated panels with prominent leaders in their industries. The half-day, nonprofit event will leave attendees with tangible advice, pathways forward, and the inspiration to bring a representative female voice to the table of life. Through dialogue and modeling, these female leaders empower young women to stand up for themselves and fearlessly chase their dreams. The event’s keynote speaker is Maya Gabeira, a Brazilian Big Wave Surfer best known for setting the 2020 World Record for the biggest wave ever surfed by a woman and the biggest wave surfed by anyone - male or female - that year at 73.3 feet. As an ESPY award winner, 7x Big Wave Award champion, and 2x Laureus nominee, Maya is one of the most influential female surfers of all time. She is also passionately committed to and a fierce advocate for restoring the world's ocean through her role as UNESCO champion of the Ocean and Youth and as part of the board of directors of Oceana. Admission is free for high school students, educators, and military members. Tickets are on sale for $35, and $25 for alumni. The funds raised from the event will support the Carondelet Annual Fund, which supports our areas of greatest need including academics, athletics, co-curricular activities, technology, campus maintenance and much more. • With the passing of CA SB-107, making CA a sanctuary state for kids seeking gender-surgery from all over the USA, the rites of Cybele and Attis are now the law of the land. Some public discussion seems warranted. OPUS GENERIS uses classical poetry to sketch the gender-identity formation process from Cybele and Attis, the boy unable to escape the mother-goddess, through the ups and downs of good and bad male role-models, to the Valentine's Day moment when Apollo, shot by Cupid's Arrow, turns from loving boys (Cyparissus) to girls (Daphne.) The show is intended to catalyze productive discussions about gender in the 21st century. To what extent is the Cybele and Attis story a model for how to live, and to what extent is it a nightmare from which we must learn to awaken? What would "conversion therapy" look like in Classical terms? How do we guide young men between the excesses of too-little and too-much male role-modeling? Greek & Latin will be performed by a professional reciter; scripts with illustrations and English translations will be provided; audience is invited to participate by reciting the English translations. OPUS GENERIS will be performed monthly in CA, to afford concerned citizens a chance to speak their minds. The highest standards of civilized and respectful discourse are expected. (OPUS GENERIS is operating in the same space as DQSH, but off a forward-moving dialectic, from Cybele and Attis TO Daphne & Apollo.) OPUS GENERIS consists of: Catullus 63, Cybele & Attis (No male role-modeling at all; Attis is unable to pull away from the mother-goddess.) Pindar Olympian #1, Poseidon & Pelops (Too much male role-modeling; Ganymede and Pelops aggressively pulled away by powerful male gods.) Homer, Odyssey II: 1-128. Telemachos without Odysseus (Too little male role-modeling; Odysseus is completely absent from Telemachos's life.) Ovid Metamorphoses, Apollo and Cyparissus, and Daphne and Apollo. (Apollo now grown up enough to try to act independently. He turns away from boys and pursues a girl his own age. Unfortunately, both Apollo & Daphne are too father-bound to make a go of the relationship. But the moment of dawning heterosexuality is preserved in poetry.)

  • Celebrate International Women’s Day with a special movie and craft night at the Women’s Museum of California. Join us for a special screening of WomanHouse, a historic documentary about one of the most important feminist cultural events of the 1970s. Judy Chicago (best-known as the creator of THE DINNER PARTY) and Miriam Shapiro rented an old Hollywood mansion and altered its interior through decor and set-pieces to "search out and reveal the female experience...the dreams and fantasies of women as they sewed, cooked, washed and ironed away their lives." WomanHouse is a fascinating historical look at feminism, its reception in the 1970s, and the ever-important relationship between art and social change. Before the film screening WMC Artistic Director Katie Ruiz will discuss the importance of the WomanHouse art project and teach attendees how to make a simple craft inspired by the feminist art movement of the 1970s.
