  • Downtown Chula Vista is excited to kick off the holiday season with a tree lighting ceremony on Sunday, December 1st from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Memorial Park on Third Avenue. This festive event, made possible with the support of the City of Chula Vista, will bring together the community for a special evening of celebration and holiday cheer. The official tree lighting ceremony will take place at 5:45 p.m. and will feature remarks from city officials and community leaders, commemorating the beginning of the festive season in Downtown Chula Vista. The highlight of the evening will be the lighting of the iconic Christmas tree, a special moment that draws residents and visitors alike to the heart of Third Avenue. In addition to the tree lighting, the Downtown Chula Vista Farmers Market will have extended hours from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., giving attendees the opportunity to enjoy drinks, bites, and even some holiday shopping while they take in the festivities.   • Gelson's Market is hosting a Bubbles and Bites tasting event in collaboration with Laurent-Perrier, the renowned Champagne house, at Gelson’s Del Mar on Wednesday, December 4th, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Guests will enjoy a four-course dinner, with each dish paired with Laurent-Perrier Champagne. The First Course is Grilled Sriracha Shrimp Skewers, Gelson's Prosciutto, and Brillat Savarin Triple Cream Cheese, paired with La Cuvée Brut NV. The Second Course is Antipasto Brochette Skewer and Toro Crudo, paired with Cuvée Rosé Brut NV. The Third Course is Lobster Salad and Cashew Chicken Skewers, paired with Blanc de Blanc Nature, and the Fourth Course is Duck Leg Confit, Parmigiano Reggiano, and Smoked Salmon and Caviar Deviled Eggs, paired with Grand Siècle.   • The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 6 to October 25. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 27, Vania Pimentel will perform a variety of Brazilian music on piano. Concert pianist Vania Pimentel, born and raised in Brazil, has been promoting Brazilian music in creative recital programs. She has a BA in Music and another BA in Philosophy from Brazil, KA graduate artist diploma from Germany, Masters in Piano Performance and Pedagogy, and DMA from the University of Houston. Her doctoral dissertation was on Brazilian toccatas, and her CD “Brazilian Toccatas and Toccatinas” was praised by the Brazilian Academy of Music and newspaper critics in Rio de Janeiro in the year of 2000, five hundreds years of Brazil’s discovery by the Portuguese. Dr. Pimentel became a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and worked as an assistant teacher at the Moores School of Music and the Texas Music Festival. In Brazil, she had worked for 14 years as a piano professor in Curitiba, PR. Her first award at a piano competition was at the age of seven in Rio de Janeiro. Her top awards are from J. S. Bach International Piano Competition in Paris (1984), and Jaen Competition in Spain (1982). Dr. Pimentel lived in Italy from 2005 until 2009, and performed at the series Pianomaster in Gravedonamon Lake Como, and chamber music at the Blaue Blumen concerts in Frankfurt. Afterwards, she lived in San Diego until 2022. She performed recitals at Palomar College, Fallbrook Library, Coronado Library, Encinitas Library, the Athenaeum, Carmel Valley Library, and chamber music in Temecula: Classics at the Merc. She performs frequently in Brazil, and has given masterclasses at many universities there. In 2020, she performed and taught at the 37th Music Workshop of Curitiba, in Paraná state. Last year she presented a solo recital during the Music Week of Lapinha, PR, and last April at the Chapel Santa Maria in Curitiba. Currently she lives in Miami.
  • The Burke Revival Film Screening & Discussion Series is launching its second season with a special screening of Kent McKenzie’s 1961 drama The Exiles at Digital Gym Cinema at UC San Diego’s Park & Market. The Exiles chronicles a night in the life of a group of 20-something Native Americans who left reservation life in the 1950s to live in the Bunker Hill district of Los Angeles. The film is a narrative feature with a script pieced together from interviews with the documentary subjects. As a bonus, attendees will also view a screening of the 1965 short documentary film Bunker Hill. After the films, UC San Diego’s Campus Minister/Religious Advisor Rev. Scott Young will lead a special discussion with a panel of guests, a film reviewer, and attendees about the film. Tickets are $13 for the general public and $11 for students and seniors.
