  • Join us on Thursday, February 12 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for a tour of "Staying Power" in the University Art Gallery with guest curator, Barbara Paris Gifford. The opening reception will follow, where artists will be in attendance. Barbara Paris Gifford is Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Craft, and Design at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York City. She oversees MAD’s renowned jewelry collection and has helped organize over twenty exhibitions in all craft mediums, including "Voulkos: The Breakthrough Years" (2016-7), "The World of Anna Sui" (2019-20), and "Jewelry Stories: Highlights from the Collection 1947-Now" (2020-ongoing), for which she edited a comprehensive catalogue. Most recently, she presented "Out of the Jewelry Box" (2024-6), an exhibition and catalogue exploring the intersection of Queerness and contemporary jewelry, and "Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture" (2025-6). An expert in jewelry and fashion, she has written and presented on these subjects for numerous publications and venues.   • Art of Elan continues its partnership with UC San Diego’s ArtPower with a deeply personal, intimate program centered on the human voice entitled “Mayrig” (“mother” in Armenian). The show was created by Karen Ouzounian and Lembit Beecher for cello with electronics, piano and vocals. The voices of Karen’s mother and grandmother are interwoven with original arrangements of Armenian music of her family’s past home of Anatolia, songs and stories drawn from their post-genocide home of Lebanon, and the beloved music of Charles Aznavour.
