Way Outside the Lines presents Destination Joy! An immersive art collaboration between San Diego neighborhoods utilizing art and the MTS Trolley System to foster solidarity and raise awareness. The Urban Collaborative Project and lead artist, Khalil Bleux, are partnering with some exceptional artists and cultural practitioners from San Ysidro, Chula Vista, National City, and Southeast San Diego for a 2-day event on August 3rd and 4th from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. on the MTS Trolley cars and select Trolley stations: San Ysidro- Iris Avenue Transit Station, Chula Vista- E Street Transit Center, National City- 24th Street Transit Center, Downtown- Park and Market, Southeast San Diego- Euclid Avenue Transit Station and Jacobs Center. The organizers of this immersive event recognize the transformative power of art, cultural practice, and solidarity in working toward equity and justice. The 2-day art program aims to inspire community engagement and raise awareness regarding the impact of systemic racism and oppressive practices such as redlining. There are two ways to enjoy this special event. Reserve a ticket for the FREE full-ride, guided immersive experience or go to any of the four FREE Trolley Station Activation sites. Community members can stop at each Trolley Station Activation to explore thought-provoking art and cultural performances. The tour will end at Destination JOY! an amazing day-long event at the Joe & Vi Jacobs Center in Southeast San Diego. Ben Redlawsk is a media production specialist for KPBS radio. He provides technical direction for KPBS “Morning Edition” and assists with “KPBS Midday Edition” and “KPBS Roundtable” through audio editing and recording. He got his start in radio as head audio engineer at KSDT, UC San Diego’s student-run radio station. Ben graduated from UC San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary computing and the arts with an emphasis in music technology.

As part of the Getty Foundation’s PST: Art and Science Collide, La Jolla Historical Society presents "Helen and Newton Harrison: California Work," a retrospective exhibition about the work of husband-and-wife team of Helen Mayer and Newton Harrison, who were among the earliest and most notable ecological artists. Pacific Arts Movement is thrilled to unveil the dynamic and inspiring film lineup for the 13th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF) Spring Showcase. Taking place at Ultrastar Cinemas in Mission Valley, San Diego, from April 18 to 25, 2024, this year's showcase promises a diverse film line-up spanning over 8 days. Audiences will enjoy a curated selection of 15+ films hailing from China, Hong Kong, Iran, South Korea, and beyond. Among the highlights is a four-film retrospective, Through Tibetan Eyes: the Films of Pema Tseden, honoring the late Tibetan filmmaker Pema Tseden, offering viewers a poignant journey into the modern Tibetan identity through the lens of cinematic mastery. Kicking off the festival on April 18 is the dramedy "The Queen of My Dreams," a nostalgic exploration of familial relationships and personal discovery following the unexpected passing of a Pakistani Canadian woman's father. As she navigates the complexities of her grief, audiences are invited on a heartfelt journey replete with cultural nuances and universal themes. This year’s Sunday Spotlight, Through Tibetan Eyes: the Films of Pema Tseden, is a retrospective on the late Pema Tseden, whose pioneering work in Tibetan cinema continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. Through four of his seminal films, viewers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Tseden's visionary storytelling and profound exploration of Tibetan identity. In addition to the compelling film lineup, the festival will feature an Asian and Asian American Poetry Jam presented by San Diego Poetry Futures 2024 on April 20. This free event includes a live poetry reading and workshop in collaboration with San Diego Poet Laureate Jason Magabo Perez, providing attendees with an enriching cultural storytelling experience beyond the screen. Bringing the showcase to a close on April 25 is the awe-inspiring documentary "Ashima," which chronicles the extraordinary feats of Ashima Shiraishi, one of the world's youngest elite rock climbers. The 27 Club presented by the Six String Society brings to life the legendary music & stories of Rock & Roll’s most infamous club. A club in which all the members share at least one thing in common; they all died tragically at the age of 27. People have wondered if they were ever all together and with the power of the audience’s imagination this occurs one evening in a mythical Greenwich Village apartment (circa 1969) the night before Woodstock. The candles burn late into the evening as these iconic figures begin to descend into the ‘Living Room.’ As the evening progresses, each icon performs their timeless songs with our signature group jam for the ages.
