Presented by San Diego New Music and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, this year’s lineup showcases cutting-edge contemporary music by a global roster of composers, along with music by friends of the festival, such as Juan Campoverde Q. Authors like Roberto Calasso, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Robert Graves impress upon us the vitality of a grammar of mythologies, not just as fantasy, but as a way of contemplating our own nature, identity, and destiny. Sometimes we create our own myths—stories in our consciousness that stand the test of time—that inform our beliefs, attitudes, and values. The territory spanned by the corridor of our existence may be bordered by history on one side and myth on the other. Music by the Sea’s very own Artistic Director, cellist Paul Tseng, opens the 2026 Season with an evening of music usually heard with cello and orchestra. Along with Justin Hansen, who masterfully recreates the entire orchestra part on the piano, they will perform pieces usually only heard in large concert halls in the intimate setting of Music by the Sea. New Exhibitions Consider Art from the Borderlands The Borrego Art Institute’s new exhibition, “The Border & Beyond: Contemporary Views” showcases the work of five artists whose works explores borders, boundaries and mediums. Featured artists in the main gallery include Ana Maria Herrara, Lupita Shahbazi, Carlos Castrejon, Melisa Rimada and Elizabeth Rodriguez. The collection ranges from oil to mixed media and fiber art and more. The North Gallery will feature “Shadows and Sanctuaries: Hidden Gods of the Valley,” an exhibition of work by Baja artist Benito Del Aquilar, whose pop art confections run deep. The opening reception is Jan. 3, 2026 from 5-7 p.m. and features the music of award-winning singer and performer Joel Torres. The shows run through January 25. This event is part of the Borrego Springs ArtWalk. Free and open to the public.
