Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “The Story of Spoons,” and Ken Albala, at 10:30 am June 15, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium at the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd. The Story of Spoons recounts the journey of food historian Ken Albala into the world of slojd carving, an entirely new area of food history and practical hands-on research. How and why both historic and contemporary spoons elide physically and aesthetically with pottery and recipes he also makes is the subject of his next book project Wooden Spoons, Clay Pots and Recipes from Scratch. Ken Albala is Tully Knoles Endowed Professor of History at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. He was the 2023 Distinguished Faculty Award recipient for the University and won the 2024 Hoefer award for Faculty-Student Collaboration for an article on the history of lasagna. His next book which will be out this fall is entitled Opulent Nosh: A Cookbook for Audacious Appetites. The Psychedelic Furs and The Jesus and Mary Chain bring their distinctive British rock to The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. The Psychedelic Furs may not have invented rock & roll per se, but their influence since arriving on the post-punk scorched-earth landscape four decades ago has reverberated and resonated among all those who cherish the sweet-and-sour spot where rawness and romanticism meet. Born out of the UK post-punk scene and led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands on college and alternative radio, scoring a flurry of major hits with "Love My Way," "Pretty in Pink," "Heaven," "The Ghost in You" and “Heartbreak Beat”. One of the most influential bands of their generation and beyond, The Jesus and Mary Chain mark their 40th anniversary in 2024 with a new album, Glasgow Eyes. Released on March 8 by Fuzz Club and distributed worldwide by Cooking Vinyl, this is the band’s first studio album since Damage and Joy (2017). Join us for a Japanese storytelling tradition called kamishibai (kami = paper; shibai = theater). A storyteller stands behind a little wooden theater, also known as a storybox, and reveals a series of illustrations that tell a tale. This program is recommended for ages 3-5. Presented by Write Out Loud.

Learn the latest advances in caring for patients with orthopedic and sports medicine injuries at a daylong symposium, featuring expert presentations and discussions. The event will bring together sports medicine physicians; former professional athletes and coaches from Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the National Basketball Association; local team general managers; athletic trainers; physical therapists; and others on the front lines of sports and athletic care. Topics will include a thorough analysis of overhead throwing athletes, such as baseball pitchers; considerations for contact sports such as football, rugby and hockey; tracking and managing mental stress in athletes; overall athletic development, performance training and injury risk reduction; and health preservation after an athletic career. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Surrealist Mexican painter, known for her vibrant colors, unflinching self-portraits, works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico, and her celebration of its indigenous culture. In this lecture, Professor of Humanities Gwenyth Mapes will look at her life and some of her art. Dr. Mapes is a Professor of Humanities at Grossmont College and taught as an Assistant Professor of Humanities at the University of Montana in Missoula.
