  • Saturday, May 9 marks the 34th anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the nation’s largest one-day food drive. Each year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers collect non-perishable food donations left by customers at their mailboxes. The food goes directly to the San Diego Food Bank and other local pantries to help families in San Diego County who are facing hunger. Over the past 30 years, the drive has collected more than 1.94 billion pounds of food nationwide. Yet the need remains high—over 47 million Americans, including 13 million children and 7.4 million seniors, experience food insecurity. The drive is especially important in spring, when many food pantries run low on supplies and school meal programs are unavailable to many children. How to help: Place a bag of non-perishable food by your mailbox on Saturday, May 9, 2026, and your letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it the San Diego Food Bank and other local food pantries. Together, we can help Stamp Out Hunger® National Association of Letter Carriers’ on Facebook / Instagram
  • A line that people sometimes remember regarding moderation belongs to Barry Goldwater: “Extremism in the pursuit of liberty is no vice, moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.” Although Goldwater’s skepticism toward moderation did not fare well in the 1964 presidential election, his words invite us to rethink the nature of moderation and examine who is afraid of this misunderstood virtue and why. In this Knapp Lecture, Aurelian Craiutu, Arthur F. Bentley Professor of Political Science at Indiana University Bloomington, argues that moderation is a complex virtue with many ethical and institutional facets and a fascinating genealogy which is often neglected. His lecture will address the following questions: What kind of virtue is political moderation? What does it mean to be a moderate voice in politics? What are the limits and benefits of moderation? Can moderation be a winning card in our hyper-polarized political world?

  • Megs and Davey are Vietnam vets who don’t see much of each other anymore, although they live in the same town. But, on opening day of trout season, Megs shows up to take Davey fishing in honor of their pal Bobby, who died alongside them in war, and to get some closure on the tragic experience they shared. Davey lives with his sister Martha, a plain, lonely high school teacher who acts as his caregiver. He masks his pain with alcohol and refuses to talk about his war experiences. The gregarious, charming Megs tries to hide his own explosively angry tendencies and can’t stop talking about Vietnam. Their friendship is tested when a romantic relationship develops between Megs and Martha. All three characters are “wounded warriors,” struggling to get past their pain, loss and guilt and get on with life. This play is recommended for high school age or older.
