This evening features the talents of Emily Afton, Julianna Zachariou, and Veronica May, hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Emily Afton is a queer multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and performer with roots across California, including Oakland, San Diego, and Los Angeles. Her nostalgia-infused alt-pop, influenced by artists like Fiona Apple, Frank Ocean, and Robyn, has been praised by NPR as "wonderful, wonderful electro-pop that’s weary of life but positive." Emily's music has captivated audiences, including a 40,000-strong crowd at the San Francisco Women's March. Her music, including her popular song ‘Lost,’ has been featured on TV shows like Riverdale and Batwoman, and she has toured with Third Eye Blind. Emily is currently releasing new singles from her upcoming second full-length album, with the latest, 'Running out of Time,' accompanied by a striking music video exploring themes of heartbreak and self-preservation. Julianna Zachariou is a San Diego-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose unique blend of pop, folk, rock, indie and Americana has garnered over 8 million streams online. Aside from her solo project, she also contributes to the band Echobaby with friend, bandmate, and co-writer Josh Flowers. On the heels of her latest SDMA-nominated album "Hero of Your Heart," Julianna is currently raising funds for her next collection of work. Veronica May is a vibrant and multi-talented musician known for her electric guitar riffs and unique acoustic sounds. Living with Bipolar 1, she uses her music to break down stigmas around mental health. Her album "Awakened" is a testament to her versatility, blending the influences of artists like Alabama Shakes and James Taylor with her own powerful voice. Collaborating with talents like Jason Mraz, Veronica's mission is to inspire and uplift, offering hope and understanding through her music to those who feel unheard. Way Outside the Lines presents Destination Joy! An immersive art collaboration between San Diego neighborhoods utilizing art and the MTS Trolley System to foster solidarity and raise awareness. The Urban Collaborative Project and lead artist, Khalil Bleux, are partnering with some exceptional artists and cultural practitioners from San Ysidro, Chula Vista, National City, and Southeast San Diego for a 2-day event on August 3rd and 4th from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. on the MTS Trolley cars and select Trolley stations: San Ysidro- Iris Avenue Transit Station, Chula Vista- E Street Transit Center, National City- 24th Street Transit Center, Downtown- Park and Market, Southeast San Diego- Euclid Avenue Transit Station and Jacobs Center. The organizers of this immersive event recognize the transformative power of art, cultural practice, and solidarity in working toward equity and justice. The 2-day art program aims to inspire community engagement and raise awareness regarding the impact of systemic racism and oppressive practices such as redlining. There are two ways to enjoy this special event. Reserve a ticket for the FREE full-ride, guided immersive experience or go to any of the four FREE Trolley Station Activation sites. Community members can stop at each Trolley Station Activation to explore thought-provoking art and cultural performances. The tour will end at Destination JOY! an amazing day-long event at the Joe & Vi Jacobs Center in Southeast San Diego. This campaign is supported through Far South/Border North, a California Creative Corps program implemented by the City of San Diego in partnership with Catalyst of San Diego & Imperial Counties, the San Diego Regional Arts and Culture Coalition, and the San Diego Foundation. It is funded, in part, by the California Arts Council, a state agency. Amanda started her musical career in San Francisco, she frequented many an open mic and one in particular at the 16th and Mission Bart Station. It was there that she was inspired to begin her path as a singer songwriter. A few years later Amanda found herself at Mesa College studying jazz and singing for the Mesa Big Band then later on joining a Congolese band in 2010 called Bateke Beat. Amanda’s musical endeavors lead her to performing at various clubs and festivals in San Diego. Portela, used her new found passion for singing Jazz and started a popular “Jazz Jam” at a Wine Bar in the heart of Hillcrest. Shortly their after, Amanda joined the Indie rock band by the name of Viva Apollo. Viva Apollo was notorious within the local San Diego music circuit, performing in all kinds of venues including a late night local cable access show, Tonight in San Diego.
