The Athenaeum and Murals of La Jolla present Kelsey Brookes, with a special presentation of his career, process, recent projects, and 2014 mural One Pointed Attention for Murals of La Jolla. The reception begins at 6 p.m., followed by an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. Kelsey Brookes' mural, One Pointed Attention, engages the viewer in a mesmerizing vision scape. His distinctive use of color and line creates a portal into an intriguing and transcendent visual experience. The undulating patterns evoke a sense of calm contemplation while also creating a more cerebral and psychological effect. His work often embodies a metaphysical and otherworldly state. The scale of One Pointed Attention allows the viewer to feel absorbed into the pulsating aura Brookes has created. Kelsey Brookes’ unique painting practice combines color and pattern-making with a comprehensive knowledge of biochemistry. Brookes was born in 1978 in Denver, Colorado. He attended Colorado State University where he studied biochemistry and pursued life as a scientist. In 2005, he left the sciences to become a full-time artist. Brookes combines a strong understanding of science with painterly skill to create colorful, highly-detailed paintings that depict the molecular structure of drug compounds, molecules, and atoms to play with sensory perception. Often starting with a central focal point, his work radiates out through precise pattern and repetition spreading across the entirety of the canvas. Brookes has had solo exhibitions in La Jolla, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, London, and Berlin. His work was featured as the cover art for the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 2012 “I’m With You” 7-inch records and The Flaming Lips’ 2013 “Stone Roses” LP. His work resides in many private collections, as well as the public permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Arkansas; and the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation, Los Angeles. Brookes lives and works in San Diego, California. Mural Members and Makers attend FREE and will receive an email to RSVP for the lecture. Immerse yourself in a collection of 25 original works by Kelsey Worth that delve into the beauty and mystery of ocean life. "Ocean Noir" features narrative and surreal pieces on paper and canvas, exploring the delicate balance between humanity and the sea while highlighting the need for conservation. This exhibition is part of the Encinitas Exhibitions in Civic Spaces Program and will be on display at Encinitas City Hall from September 6, 2024 to January 9, 2025. On Art Night, November 16, artist Kelsey Worth will offer a talk and walk-through of the exhibition. Vendors and makers include Hello Barkada, Good Faith, Tijuana's Corrientes/Impresiciones, My Little Underground, Red Brontosaurus Records, Beyond the Veil and more. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the organizers: Burn All Books, Particle FM, and San Diego Public Library team up to celebrate independent publishing, zines, DIY culture, and music at the second annual COMPRESSED zine and music fair. 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday Aug. 10 San Diego Central Library's Shiley Suite What: Burn All Books, Particle FM, and San Diego Public Library are partnered up to throw COMPRESSED, a zine & music fair, at the SD Central Library (beautiful rooftop view of downtown!) August 10th 2024 from 11am-5pm. This event is all ages, free to the public. We have 65 exhibitors from the San Diego-Baja region with an emphasis on zine makers and vinyl/cassette vendors, as well as the SD Central Library exhibiting their zine collection and printing library cards. Why: Burn All Books and Particle FM are teaming up to present another zine and music fair, with zine exhibitors, DJs, and vinyl vendors from the SD-Baja region and beyond. Inspired by radio/zine collaborations like NYC's 8ball Radio, COMPRESSED was created to bring together our music and independent publishing community in a compressed, intimate space. COMPRESSED will have various art, vinyl, zine vendors with Particle FM DJs playing music. During the year we keep COMPRESSED alive with workshops that bring in speakers from orgs like the Lambda Archives of San Diego, speaking on the topic of the history of queer zine culture in San Diego. This event is completely volunteer run with people from Burn All Books and Particle FM. About Burn All Books: Burn All Books is a risograph publisher, distro, and studio in San Diego, California. Focused on community and collaboration, we work with San Diego and Tijuana, MX based artists, writers and creators to produce zines, artists’ books, alternative comics, and art prints. Through the accessibility and versatility of risograph printing, Burn All Books has become an avenue for promoting and publishing alternative art as resources from and for the people. As of January 2023 we have published over 35 publications and worked with over 100 artists, writers and zine makers since beginning in October 2017. Burn All Books strives to continue printing, growing and fostering an inclusive space for art and culture with a DIY spirit. About Particle FM: Established in 2021 by a diverse group of artists, DJs, and music nerds, Particle FM is a DIY community internet radio station based in San Diego with a non-profit fiscal sponsorship through The Media Arts Center of San Diego.
