  • From the KPBS/Arts newsletter: Maybe I've been working in local arts for too long, but if you gave me two seconds to name whatever jazz trumpeters first came to mind, I'd say Miles Davis and Gilbert Castellanos, our own local icon. If you're anything like that, then this concert is made for you. Castellanos will perform at the Rady Shell with his band to celebrate Davis' "Kind of Blue," which was released 65 years ago to the date of this concert. 7:30 p.m., Aug. 17. $18-$70. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the organizers: Join Gilbert Castellanos and friends as they celebrate Miles Davis and his all-star band at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. One of the greatest albums of all time and the best-selling jazz album ever, Miles Davis' masterpiece "Kind of Blue" is as relevant and revered today as when it was recorded in 1959. Talented student musicians of the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory perform a pre-concert set.

  • Dozens more migrants were dropped off at the Oceanside Transit Center Friday. Local leaders are calling it a symptom of a broken immigration system. In other news, a lot of vehicles that used to only run on human power have been electrified. The offer of greater speed and ease of use from electric bikes, scooters and skateboards, has encouraged travelers and environmentalists who want to reduce our reliance on gas-powered cars. But are they safe? Plus, it’s Hispanic Heritage month, and the San Diego Unified School District has a first-of-its-kind flag flying over its administration building.
  • Join us for a fun workshop with GOLDEN Artist Educator, Lisa Bebi where we will create a unique painting of our moms for Mother's Day! Painting using imagery in our art making is such a fun way to tell a visual story. We use photocopies as the underlying image and build from there. This is a way of creating expressive and fun art that can stand up to any other form of art. In this workshop, learn how to paint over a photocopy and how to properly adhere paper seamlessly to a substrate—without bubbles or creases. Students will walk away with a small painting and an understanding of this fun process—not to mention, these make great Mother's Day gifts! • Botticelli and Florence, 1434-94: Politics, Patronage, and Paranoia 15th-century Florence was laden with treachery, conspiracy, and paranoia, a striking backdrop to the artistic flourishing facilitated by the family ruling the city from behind the scenes—the Medici. We'll follow the development of political tension and turmoil at the dawn of the Renaissance, examining how art became weaponized as propaganda by the Florentine state. Looking closely at the work of Botticelli and his contemporaries, we'll discuss altarpieces, portraits, and wedding gifts, recognizing the potential for artists' lives and work to serve as a window into their time in history. About Weili Jin: Weili Jin has been passionate about the history of art ever since first seeing Botticelli in the second grade. Ten years later, he continues to specialize in the paintings of Renaissance Florence, particularly the patronage of the Medici. Most recently, he has worked to develop the YouTube channel “Narrative Art History,” a lecture series that contextualizes Renaissance art in a continuous, chronological narrative.
