  • Lecture speaker event with Dr. Alina Polyakova on the Russian-Ukrainian War moderated by SDSU Professor Mikhail Alexseev. Dr. Alina Polyakova is President and CEO of the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) as well as the Donald Marron Senior Fellow at the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs at the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Dr. Polyakova is a recognized expert on transatlantic relations, European security including Russia and Ukraine, tech policy, and populism. She is the author of the book, "The Dark Side of European Integration," which examines the rise of far-right political movements in Europe, as well as dozens of major policy reports and articles in outlets such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, and The Atlantic, and others. She is a frequent commentator in major media outlets, such as Fox News, CNN, and BBC. Dr. Polyakova is an experienced leader with previous roles as the Founding Director for Global Democracy and Emerging Technology at the Brookings Institution, Director of Research for Europe and Eurasia at the Atlantic Council, among others. She has also held numerous prestigious fellowships, including at the National Science Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and the Fulbright Foundation, among others. She serves on the board of the Free Russia Foundation and is a member of the Leadership Council for Women in National Security (LCWINS) and the Scientific Council of the Elcano Royal Institute. Dr. Polyakova holds a Ph.D. and MA in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BA in Economics and Sociology from Emory University. With guidance from one of Native Poppy’s professional florists, you’ll explore balance, color pairing, and foundational techniques. The workshop continues with floral sourdough scoring led by Katrina of The Sourdough Mama.   • Complimentary Entry | No Reservations Required Brazilian Jazz Night brings together a group of standout Southern California musicians for an evening celebrating the rhythm, warmth, and beauty of Brazil’s musical tradition. At the center is vocalist Lexi Pulido, whose expressive voice and natural feel for the music bring elegance and soul to classic bossa nova and samba repertoire. Leading the ensemble on drums, Matthew Elton Smith brings a deep sense of groove and musical direction to the group, blending jazz sensibility with the subtle pulse and flow of Brazilian rhythms. His playing helps guide the ensemble while leaving space for the kind of spontaneous interaction that makes live jazz exciting. The band also features vibraphonist Ian Harland, whose shimmering sound and melodic improvisations add a unique color to the group. Guitarist Aaron Lind provides the harmonic foundation with the smooth, rhythmic feel that is central to Brazilian music, while bassist Harley Magsino anchors everything with warm tone, lyrical lines, and an effortless pocket.   • Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) will host the “Igniting Hope, Building CommUNITY Family & Friends Festival" on Saturday, May 2, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Liberty Station Central Promenade (2641 Truxtun Rd, San Diego, CA 92106). In recognition of Foster Care Awareness Month, the free, community-centered event will bring together nonprofit organizations, community leaders, volunteers, and young people looking for a path to success for an afternoon of connection, celebration, and collaboration. Moving beyond a traditional resource fair, the festival is designed as an immersive experience that strengthens connections across people and services. It focuses on building a more coordinated and accessible support system for transition-age foster youth and other underserved populations. The event will bring together hundreds of young people seeking pathways to stability, alongside community leaders, families, and friends working to build meaningful relationships and advance a more connected, solutions-based model of support. Attendees from the broader community will also have the opportunity to connect with organizations, explore volunteer opportunities, and learn how to get involved in supporting local youth. The event will feature approximately 40 participating organizations offering resources across a wide range of services, including housing, education, job training, mental health support, financial literacy, and health services. Participating organizations will engage directly with attendees, showcase their impact, and connect with other peer organizations to identify gaps they can address together, helping to build stronger, more collaborative partnerships. Attendees can expect a lively, family-friendly atmosphere with live entertainment, interactive experiences, and local food. The event will feature a performance by San Diego-based artist Divina Jasso, along with entertainment from magician The Amazing Dana. Guests can also participate in yoga sessions, enjoy an open-air glam booth, and hear directly from two JIT youth speakers sharing their personal stories. A lineup of local food trucks, including Dirty Birds, Born in Brooklyn, Dilly’s Ice Cream, and Juicy Shawarma, will be on-site throughout the event. More than just a one-day event, “Igniting Hope, Building CommUNITY” represents a broader shift toward collaboration in the nonprofit sector, bringing organizations together to better serve individuals who need a reliable, connected network of support.   • An unbreakable bond shared between lifelong mates, Dave and Henry hail from the tiny farming community of Kojonup, a town three hours south of Perth, Western Australia. Starting out as school friends and rehearsing in a makeshift space in an old farm shed, Old Mervs are a far cry from their humble beginnings. Riding a wave of wins, Old Mervs are celebrating a massive 2025 after the success of their ARIA-charting debut album release and sold out tours across Australia, the United States, the UK and Europe. Recorded with ARIA award-winning producer Chris Collins, their debut self-titled album scored coveted Australian youth broadcaster triple j’s Feature Album of the week and landed at #1 on the ARIA album charts, winning hearts with hits “Parched," “What You’ve Lost," “Forget It," “Everyone Will See It” and “Don’t Go." In 2025, the pair embarked on a mammoth 20 date album tour across Australia and New Zealand along with their biggest headline home-state show to date at Perth HPC.   • Carin León is a regional Mexican music artist from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. The singer began releasing music with a series of live albums in 2018, including "Desvelada con Banda y Mariachi (En Vivo)," "A Puro Pelo (100% En Vivo)," "Pa’ las de Vidrio (En Vivo)" and "Amanecida con Todo y con Todos." His debut studio album, "El Malo," was then released independently in 2019 followed by his sophomore set, "Inédito," in 2021. However, Leon’s big break came in 2022 when he collaborated with Grupo Frontera on the single “Que Vuelvas,” which landed at No. 2 on Billboard’s Mexico Songs chart and became his first entry on the Hot 100. León’s 2023 album "Colmillo de Leche" peaked at No. 5 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Albums tally and also became his first Top 10 hit on the Top Latin Albums chart.
