  • Viva La Raza: Reflections on San Diego’s Chican@ Movement is a multigenerational exhibition presented by The Woo in collaboration with Subcultura Curation in Barrio Logan, one of San Diego’s recognized cultural districts. Opening Saturday, April 11, 2026, the exhibition is inspired by the resistance, cultural pride, and community movement surrounding Chicano Park Day (April 25) and will be on view throughout that weekend. Through visual art, archival materials, photography, and storytelling, "Viva La Raza" brings together multiple perspectives reflecting the history, culture, and creative spirit of San Diego’s Chican@ community. The exhibition features Aztlan Archives as a central historical anchor, a focus on the Queer Chicanx experience in collaboration with Lambda Archives of San Diego, a community-led photography exhibition by Manuel Ceniceros and "All For Logan," and a solo presentation of new works by BRISK ONE. Together, these elements highlight both the legacy and ongoing evolution of the movement in San Diego. The exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to reflect on the histories, cultural contributions, and creative expressions that continue to define and inspire the region today. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!

  • What is a Dirty Cello? Find out at New Village Arts in Carlsbad on April 18. The band Dirty Cello is a globe trotting band that performs blues, rock and Americana, all fronted by virtuoso cellist Rebecca Roudman. A classically trained symphony player, Roudman dropped the straight- jacket of classical music years ago and hasn’t looked back since. “We travel all over the place,” says Roudman, “and everywhere we go, the idea is to put on a high energy show. We’re a rock band, but with a cello instead of a lead guitar.” The Dirty Cello band really does get around - with shows from Iceland, to China, to a Santa Cruz nudist resort. The band will be performing for the first time at the New Village Arts in Carlsbad on April 18 for a special afternoon show. Among their many descriptions, Oakland Magazine describes the group as, "Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky, carnival, romantic, sexy, tangled, electric, fiercely rhythmic, and textured, and only occasionally classical." Roudman agrees with this description and adds, “We’re all about the fun at our shows and we step on stage with only a vague plan as to what specific songs we are going to play, and we react to what the audience wants to hear and adjust accordingly.” With a set list ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Charlie Daniels to rocking original songs, the band can deliver on this promise. • The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) announces "The Dean Collection Presents: Hometown Heroes," a new exhibition opening April 18, 2026, alongside "Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys." To celebrate San Diego’s creative community, Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys approached MCASD with the idea of spotlighting local artists from the Dean Collection to accompany the run of "Giants." MCASD collaborated with the Deans to organize "Hometown Heroes," which will feature photographers MJ Pimentel, Oscar Cruz, and Chata, drawn from the Dean Collection, in dialogue with selected works from the museum’s permanent collection by regional artists Andrea Chung, Esteban Cabeza de Baca, and Fox Maxy. Works by Pimentel, Cruz and Chata capture facets of life in San Diego with images that speak to the encroachment of gentrification, a longstanding history of Chicana/o/e activism, lowrider car culture, and community pride. With an eye towards the natural environment, Chung’s cyanotypes of lionfish shed light on the enduring effects of colonialism, while Cabeza de Baca’s layered painting and Maxy’s sculptural video installation point to the cultural and ecologic forces that have shaped the U.S. /Mexico border region. This exhibition celebrates San Diego’s artists and histories born from a recent acquisition made by The Dean Collection. "Neighborhood Visualz," an exhibition showcasing film photographs by Cruz and Pimentel, was on view at Por Vida, a coffee shop and gallery in Barrio Logan, when Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) paid a visit and decided to purchase the entire show. This is in line with the Deans’ unique approach to collecting that centers on forming personal relationships with artists and amplifying voices that have been historically underrepresented. This MCASD exclusive exhibition centers Black, Brown, and Indigenous experiences at a critical time. As the first "Giants" venue incorporating both English and Spanish labels, MCASD continues to further their commitment to highlighting the work of Latino/a/e artists in the broader San Diego community and beyond. Local traditions will also be incorporated into the run of "Giants," starting with a performance and blessing by Danza Mexi’cayotl—one of the oldest and most respected Chichimeca-Azteca dance groups in San Diego County—to kick off the exhibition’s opening celebration. "Hometown Heroes" is curated by MCASD Associate Curator, Amy Crum, and will be on view April 18 through Nov. 8, 2026.
