The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) will host its third EXPO Design Market in partnership with Mortis Studio and Kiku Room, on June 6 and 7. Taking place on Saturday, June 6 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday, June 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., EXPO is a two-day event series built to showcase the best of publishing, design, music, and community within San Diego and its neighboring communities across Southern California at a moment when access to arts funding and cultural spaces is increasingly uncertain. At its core, EXPO is an exchange of ideas, networking, and collaboration meant to encourage meaningful connection, and is guided by MCASD’s mission to inspire expansive thinking and an inclusive world through contemporary art. The weekend will be filled with goods for sale by local vendors, curated DJ sets, and thought-provoking artist talks. In this course, students will address some of San Diego County’s most pressing community problems by developing a competitive grant proposal for a non-profit organization. Students will learn the golden rules of grant writing; common mistakes made by inexperienced grant writers; and key components of grant proposals, including how to write the program description, evaluation, budget and sustainability sections. We will also discuss how to identify and develop a relationship with grant funders. Finally, students will have the opportunity to review and vet a live grant proposal. Preparing the studio for "Echoes of the Vast" — the first installation and soft launch of Earth / House / Hold. Beginning with my own paintings is a way of establishing the space’s curatorial language and presence before future exhibitions and invited artists. Earth / House / Hold is an artist-run curatorial platform devoted to the slow encounter between work, material, land, time, and the wild conditions that shape perception and place. My work explores how landscapes absorb time, memory, and traces of passage through layered material processes that respond to shifting conditions, rather than depicting something fixed. Growing up between Southern California and Arizona, I remain drawn to vast arid landscapes where erosion, accumulation, atmosphere, light, and surface carry history forward. I studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York, NY with Alice Aycock and Shirley Irons, and later received an MFA from The Claremont Colleges - Claremont Graduate University and an MA in Arts Management from the Peter F. Drucker School of Management in Claremont, California. My work is held in public and private collections across the United States. This exhibit features award-winning, innovative works from the biennial competition of the Japanese Handicraft Instructor’s Association (JHIA). Quilt Nihon is the largest international quilt contest in Japan, and one of the most prestigious in the world. For 50 years now, JHIA has promoted handcrafted arts in Japan by educating and training instructors in eight specialties: quilting, knitting, embroidery, lace making, painting, weaving, leatherwork, and flower art. The JHIA boasts 7,000 certified quilt instructors among its 12,000 members. Its biennial Quilt Nihon exhibition is a unique opportunity to appreciate the creativity and complexity of these works of art. This year’s exhibition features award-winning and notable works in its selection.
