Ages 7-12 years welcome! This Camp is focused on helping our favorite friends in the garden–Bees! Children will explore crafts and all things bee-related. They’ll learn about the basics of bee’s society, the role of the queen, drones and worker bees. They’ll learn about beekeeping and get to look up close at an empty beehive. They’ll also have the opportunity to taste honey (optional)! Kids will explore bees with time in our Organic Garden learning with Master Gardener Paul Maschka. And, they’ll dip candles and make bee houses with a fun woodworking project with our Woodworking Instructor Aleya Lanteigne! What to bring: Please dress your child so they’re comfortable both indoors and outdoors, as much of this all-day camp will take place outdoors, dependent on weather. A hat is recommended and it’s best to dress in layers. Children must wear closed-toe shoes and have long hair tied back. On Sunday afternoon, November 16, Poet Tree Productions presents "Depth of Field", a matinee of live music, poetry, and artisans to reset your default. With poets Allisa Cherry, Majda Gama, & Heidi Seaborn, musicians Rebecca Matayoshi & Evan Pasternak, and artisans Beth Peters, Josh Bariuan of Fir Street Pottery, Carla Wilson Studio & Laura Christensen Studio. In honor of a month of gratitude, we're also hosting Good Neighbor Gardens to share what they're nurturing in gardens, education, food boxes, and sharing abundance with those in need. But behind the scenes, things get even stranger. Nearly all cephalopod females mate with multiple males and can store sperm for weeks to months. That means each female carries a tiny archive of potential fathers. So the big question becomes: when everyone is competing for a spot in that archive, how do cephalopod females decide who to mate with, and can they control whose sperm ultimately fertilizes their eggs? About the Speaker Theodora is a PhD student in Marine Biology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. Prior to starting at SIO, Theodora researched chronic reproductive pain conditions in New York, created marine science multimedia as a science communication intern at Point Reyes National Seashore, and studied cephalopod neuroethology as a research intern at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology. Theodora currently studies the evolutionary and behavioral dynamics of female choice in cephalopods, with a focus on local California market squid. (75 min) About the “Stupeur et tremblements” (Fear and trembling): Winter 1990. In Brussels, Amélie Nothomb has finished her studies in medieval roman philology. She decides to travel back to Japan in order to work, a country she knows since she was born there. She gets a one year work contract for the Yumimoto company. This job, more than she hope for, will bring her many surprises, from which she will learn various lessons... The main character is, of course, Amélie Nothomb herself, who writes autobiographically. Fear and trembling is a humble, funny and intelligent point of view from a young woman confronted to a new world. The message it carries could be : Let’s observe and listen carefully, before we hastily judge the Other.
