  • In an era marked by escalating climate disruption and urgent calls for global sustainability, the Eugene M. Burke C.S.P. Lectureship on Religion and Society is honored to welcome Bill McKibben—author, activist, and one of the world’s most influential voices on climate change—to UC San Diego’s Jeannie Auditorium on Thursday, April 23, 2026. McKibben’s lecture arrives at a critical time, exploring the moral and spiritual dimensions of climate change. More than three decades ago, his groundbreaking book "The End of Nature" introduced climate change to a wide audience, launching a career bridging science, ethics, and community action. As founder of 350.org, he has built a global grassroots climate campaign and driven the fossil fuel divestment movement, shaping worldwide ethical conversations about protecting our planet. This lecture offers a rare opportunity to re-engage with the moral stakes of environmental action, inviting all audiences to consider how courage, truth, and collective responsibility can shape a more sustainable and equitable future. The lecture will be moderated by Marco Werman, award-winning journalist and host of The World (WGBH Boston & PRX). Werman’s global perspective will guide a dialogue examining the intersections of faith, justice, and activism, probing how ethics, civic responsibility, and human solidarity can be tools for confronting the climate crisis.
  • Grief touches every part of us, yet no two experiences of it are the same. Like a fingerprint, it is entirely our own. Finding ways to move with grief, rather than against it, often means exploring what helps us express, process, and integrate loss into our lives. Join us for an intimate and interactive workshop with author Laing Rikkers, whose own grief journey began with the death of her sister. In the aftermath, she found an unexpected companion in creative writing, eventually leading to her book Morning Leaves. Through her story, Laing will share how poetry and time in nature became a pathway for navigating life after loss, offering moments of clarity, connection, and even beauty. Together, we’ll explore how creativity can serve as a gentle outlet for grief. This experience includes guided discussion, quiet time in nature to reflect and notice what arises, and an opportunity to engage in your own writing or creative expression. We’ll close by gathering in community to share reflections on the experience of slowing down, turning inward, and tapping into creativity as a tool for grief. Sharing is always optional. We’ll provide blank notebooks, pens, and markers, or you’re welcome to bring your own journal. This is not about doing it “right.” It’s about discovering what feels true for you. We hope to see you soon! The Death Network: Website / TikTok / Instagram
