  • An evening of improvised, creative, and experimental music & sound featuring: Intangible An a Los Angeles-area quartet exploring overtones, extremes of density and volume, and intersections of multiple improvisational traditions. Formed in June 2023, they have performed across California, including at UCLA, Cal Arts, Open Gate, the Wonder Valley Experimental Music Festival, SF Sound, Luminex, and on KFJC radio. They have collaborated with vocalist Ken Ueno, video artist Carole Kim, and dancers Oguri and Roxanne Steinberg. Each member brings an unique combination of experience in improvised, composed, and traditional musics of multiple cultures: gamin (piri & saenghwang), Robert Reigle (tenor saxophone), Jeff Schwartz (bass), and Tim Feeney (percussion). Anita Chandavarkar, Leanna Keith, Lyra Montoya flute trio: Flutist Anita Chandavarkar is an improviser, interpreter, and composer. She has collaborated with such groups as Ensemble Dal Niente, ALEA III, Callithumpian Consort, and Brooklyn Raga Massive, and has worked with such composers and performers John Adams, Tony Arnold, and Jason Eckardt. Anita also studies bansuri in the Maihar Gharana of the Hindustani North Indian Classical tradition. A freelance flutist, artist, improviser, and composer from Seattle, Leanna Keith (she/they) delights in creating sound experiences that make audiences laugh, cry, and say: “I didn’t know the flute could do that!” Their works focus on timbre-shifting, the mixed-race experience, queer theory, and the breaking of genre boundaries. Leanna is obsessed with conduction, butoh, taiko drumming, circus arts, and the limitless capacity of humanism in sound creation. She is dedicated to playing music by living composers, and advocates for the usage of music as social activism. Lyra Montoya is a woodwinds specialist, composer and performer. Her work explores the intersections of identity and positionality through mixes of Music notation and improvisation, and how performance practice and musical concept reflect the priorities of the performance event.

  • Saturday, February 14, brings a special Valentine’s Day appearance by a favorite Athenaeum performer, Anat Cohen, with Quartetinho. The band plays two separate 75-minute performances, one at 6 p.m. and the other at 8:30 p.m. The word quartetinho is Portuguese for “little quartet,” although the players make a big, color-rich sound, each an ace on multiple instruments: Anat on various clarinets, Tal Mashiach on bass and guitar, Vitor Gonçalves on piano and accordion, and James Shipp on vibraphone and percussion. Their concerts showcase compositions by each member of the band and by the great masters such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Egberto Gismonti, Thelonious Monk, Augustín Barrios Mangoré, and more. The result is boundlessly melodic and lyrical. Cohen has been declared Clarinetist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) every year since 2007 and has also been named the top clarinetist in both the Readers and Critics Polls in DownBeat for multiple years running. That’s not to mention years of being named Rising Star in the soprano and tenor saxophone categories in DownBeat, as well as Jazz Artist of the Year, among other honors. As The Chicago Tribune said about Anat, “The lyric beauty of her tone, easy fluidity of her technique and extroverted manner of her delivery make this music accessible to all.” Athenaeum Music & Arts Library on Facebook / Instagram
  • Grief isn’t only something we experience after a death. We grieve relationships, careers, dreams, and a changing sense of safety, and many of us are also grieving the state of the world itself. These everyday griefs are often unspoken, yet they shape how we navigate life and care for one another. Many of us are wondering how to stay engaged with what’s happening in the world while also caring for our own mental and emotional well-being. This 90-minute interactive, donation-based grief workshop explores grief as a life skill - one that helps us adapt to unwanted change, understand what we need to cope, and remain open to compassion for others during times of distress and communal grief. This workshop offers grief education, guided sharing, community connection, and a grounding practice to support living well and caring for others during times of communal grief. The Death Network was founded with community, curiosity, and connection at its core, and this workshop with grief coaches Wendy Kessler and Claudia Faerber reflects that intention — creating space to be honest, present, and human together. This workshop is for those seeking helpful, practical ways to understand and navigate everyday grief as it shows up in daily life. Whether your grief feels clear or hard to name, you are welcome here — to learn, reflect, and be in community with others who are also finding their way. Created for those looking for helpful ways to navigate everyday grief as it weaves through daily life, this space welcomes both the named and unnamed losses we carry. Come to learn, reflect, and sit in community with others walking a similar path. This workshop is offered by donation to keep it accessible to all. Your support helps us continue creating community spaces like this. Venmo: @thedeathnetwork https://www.thedeathnetwork.com/
