Join San Diego ART Matters and the San Diego County Arts & Culture Commission for the District 1 stop of the In Community series — a countywide initiative designed to bring together artists, cultural organizations, and creative partners through welcoming gatherings filled with conversation, collaboration, and inspiration. This event continues the series’ commitment to engaging communities across the region, including those in District 1 represented by Supervisor Paloma Aguirre. This District 1 gathering will take place at the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center on Tuesday, June 30, from 2– 4 p.m. The afternoon will be a relaxed and engaging gathering focused on connection and community. Guests will enjoy music and spoken word, along with opportunities to meet fellow artists, cultural leaders, and community partners from across the region. The program will include informal networking, a brief update on regional arts advocacy and resources, and an opportunity to connect with County Arts & Culture District 2 Commissioners Monica Hernandez and Marisa Rosalez, along with a special welcome to Christine Jones, the County’s new Manager of Art, Film and Creative Industries. In Community is presented by San Diego ART Matters through its Local Arts Agency Learning Network, sponsored by the Prebys Foundation. Admission is free and open to the public. The colorful Encinitas Arts Alive banners displayed along Coast Highway this summer will be auctioned to the public at the Encinitas Community Center. Back to San Diego borderlandia, a must see iconic one-time show by performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña - writer, activist, radical pedagogue & artistic director of the performance troupe La Pocha Nostra. In this solo performance monologue, performance artist and writer Guillermo Gómez-Peña presents a selection of classic texts from his vast “living archives” alongside recent work written over the past four years. Artist Statement: My current performance represents the fruit of my life’s work in all its iterations: live performance, lecturing, archiving, literary work, mentoring, community activism, all coming together to address the dangers of the times we live in with its disregard for human life and insidious undermining of democracy. At this time in my life I am thinking as much about legacy as I am trying to continually produce socially conscious experimental artwork that is simultaneously plugged into the national debates. I have learned from decades of touring performance material to locations beyond the Border that a call to action - in the form of a work of art - has the power to elicit compassion and inculcate a desire for social justice. For me performance art is a form of radical democracy and citizenship which depends on the presence of the audience/community to succeed. I view my approach to creating this hybrid piece as "performing the archives" for multiple contexts: The art world, academia, community and the media. I am particularly interested in connecting with a new generation of audience members who may not have been exposed to the history of my generation, performance art and the Chicano movement. The 2026 San Diego International Fringe Festival runs for 12 days with new venues from Poway to Ensenada, international artists and the World Fringe Congress coming to San Diego.

ArtWalk is back at Liberty Station for its 21st year, bringing a weekend-long celebration of arts and culture to the Arts District Liberty Station, July 31 through August 2. The festival celebrates creativity from both sides of the border, with more than 175 artists coming from across several states and Mexico to show and sell their artwork, including paintings, photography, glass and ceramics, jewelry, and sculpture. For families, there will also be a KidsWalk with a variety of hands-on art activities and experiences. In addition to exploring a variety of artists, guests can partake in the “Paint the Day at the Beach,” an interactive, artist-led activation that invites ArtWalk attendees to collaboratively bring a joyful coastal scene to life. The activation features large-scale, aerial-view coastal artworks, created by Artist Sarah Honaker, using textured and dimensional elements inspired by a day at the beach. ArtWalk Liberty Station offers a fabulous outdoor setting, with an abundance of free parking. The festival has a perimeter fence, even though admission is free; the fence allows attendees to enjoy beer and wine (for those 21 years and over), while strolling around the event, rather than having to remain in a beer garden. Guests are asked to show their ID to receive a wristband to be able to purchase alcoholic beverages. This fine art show is part of the ArtWalk San Diego brand known for bringing together all facets of the arts throughout San Diego, while promoting the experience of owning original art.
