In this workshop, we guide you from start to finish as you select, cut, hot glue and assemble the pieces and personality of your own customized puppet. No sewing is required in this workshop. About the speaker: Alex Villafuerte (he/him) is the Executive Director of Pacific Arts Movement, home of the San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF), now in its 26th year as one of the largest showcases of Asian and Asian American cinema in North America. A Filipino American executive with nearly a decade of nonprofit and community leadership, Alex has advanced cultural equity through film, coalition-building, and advocacy for underrepresented communities. Since becoming Executive Director in 2023, Alex has overseen the organization’s 25th anniversary celebrations, launched new community access programs such as free tickets for high school-aged youth and younger, and deepened partnerships across Southern California’s arts and cultural sectors. Under his leadership, Pac Arts continues to present hundreds of films annually, nurture the next generation of filmmakers through Reel Voices, and bring global stories to local audiences. Beyond Pac Arts, Alex is co-chair and a founding member of the San Diego API Coalition, convening more than 50 AA & NHPI-serving organizations to foster collaboration and capacity-building across the region. His career has included leadership roles with San Diego Pride, the Asian Business Association San Diego, and NQAPIA, where he has championed intersectional communities and amplified underrepresented voices. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Diversionary Theatre and on the Trustee Advisory Council for the San Diego Community College District. Born in Oʻahu and raised in San Diego, Alex is a proud graduate of Morse High School and San Diego State University, where he earned a B.A. in Economics. Among the strangest and most perturbing films of his overlooked Mexican period, "Él" is Luis Buñuel’s incisive portrait of paranoia, jealousy, and sexual obsession—a nightmarish tale of love gone wrong that prefigures the major themes of his 1960s and ’70s work. Incorporating his personal demons into an adaptation of Mercedes Pinto’s autobiographical novel, Buñuel tells the story of Francisco Galván de Montemayor (Arturo de Córdova), a devout middle-aged bachelor who falls into amour fou with Gloria (Delia Garcés). After breaking her engagement with another man, Gloria realizes something is terribly off about Francisco, whose sophisticated facade masks deep insecurities and an explosive, violent temper. Descending into madness, Francisco drives Gloria to fear for her life—with no refuge offered by either her family or the church. One of Buñuel’s rawest, angriest indictments of religious and social hypocrisy, "Él" stands as the surrealist master’s great excursion into dark melodrama, where civilization can find no answer to the raging urges of the irrational id. Carlsbad Reads Together is an annual city-wide event held every April that connects the entire community through reading and special programming and events. This year, please join the Library for a fascinating evening with Pulitzer Prize winning author Hua Hsu, as he discusses this year’s selection, "Stay True," in conversation with ABTB founder Susan McBeth. This event is free and open to the public, with seating offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
