Learn to Sew & Hem! This class is a continuation of the Family and Beginner Sewing 101. In this next series, Instructor Hannah Gioutlos will guide you through the process of sewing a drawstring backpack. We will learn how to place our pattern on your fabric and cut it out with scissors or a rotary cutter. Then we will show tips on using a seam gauge to find the hem allowance. Next we will learn the proper way to press our fabric into place to get ready for hemming. For students who complete this project early, you can also learn to sew a pet bandana for your furry friends. REQUIREMENT: If you are new to using a sewing machine, you must take Family & Beginner Sewing 101 | Sewing Machine Basics first. In order to enroll in 102, a student must know how to thread and use a/their sewing machine and be comfortable with beginner sewing techniques. FABRIC CHOICE: All materials are included. If you’d like to bring your own fabric to sew with, students must bring at minimum a half yard or two fat quarters of 100% cotton quilting or cotton canvas. Cotton jersey and stretchy fabrics will not be sewn in this class. MACHINE CHOICE: It’s ideal to bring your own sewing machine for this class, but you may also borrow and learn on one of ours. Please note if bringing your own sewing machine it is very important to make sure it is fully functional. No experience necessary. Materials included. Ages 12+ years are welcome. Ages 7+ must attend with an adult to assist! ***If you’re attending with your child, and participating only as support, just purchase 1 space. If you both will learn and create a project side-by-side, please purchase 2 spaces. Please be punctual to this class. Students who show up more than 15 min late will not be able to catch up, and will be turned away to keep the class on schedule. Plan ahead for traffic and parking. The San Diego Watercolor Society proudly presents “Nature’s Echo,” juried by award-winning artist, Susan Kieth. The water-based media exhibition runs Apr 26 – May 30, 2026, at our Gallery in The Arts District Liberty Station. The free Opening Reception is Friday, May 1, 5-8 p.m. with over 95 ready-to-hang original paintings plus refreshments and the fellowship of other art enthusiasts. Monday – Friday, March 30 – April 3, from 1 – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 welcome! Taught by a variety of skilled educators and professional artists, your child will explore a fun variety of crafts this Spring Break, from Ceramics to Macrame’ and Hand Sewing! Along the way, we’ll make fun, high-quality crafts that kids can take home, like a ceramic snack plate, a macrame’ plushie hanger and a handmade plushie! Our projects are geared to build and hone skills such as hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, creativity, comprehension + exploration of a variety of materials. Projects and depth of craft exploration are matched up to the child’s age and ability. It’s important that your child bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty during this time. In addition, if your child is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station, and they’re camp is ending as ours begins, we are happy to walk your child from their camp to the studio. Twenty years after "Under the Perfect Sun" was first published, authors Kelly Mayhew and Jim Miller return for a special anniversary conversation at the San Diego History Center on August 6, 2026, at 6 p.m. Originally coauthored with the late Mike Davis, the book examines the city’s history of militarization, economic inequality, corruption, racial injustice, and political transformation, while highlighting the activists and communities who challenged entrenched power. This updated and expanded anniversary edition revisits San Diego’s evolution from a conservative stronghold to a more progressive city still shaped by ongoing struggles over gentrification, labor, and social justice. Kelly Mayhew is a writer, editor, oral historian, and founding member of San Diego City Works Press and teaches English, Humanities, Labor Studies, and Gender Studies at San Diego City College. Jim Miller has published poetry, fiction, and nonfiction in a wide range of journals and other publications, and teaches English, Humanities, and Labor Studies at San Diego City College. A wildfire, dubbed the Thorn Fire, blackened thousands of brush-covered acres in the rural southeastern reaches of the San Diego area Wednesday, prompting evacuation orders and shutting down a stretch of nearby freeway as ground and airborne crews worked to subdue the flames.

Over 100 hands-on exhibits fill the ballpark, drawing more than 20,000 visitors and making this the largest event of its kind in Southern California. Programming spans the full STEAM spectrum — science, technology, engineering, arts, and math — with exhibits designed for everyone from pre-K to grandparents. A little history: Expo Day launched in 2009 at Balboa Park before finding a long-term home at Petco Park from 2010 through 2023 — thirteen consecutive years. The 2026 edition marks its return. What's there: The Illumina Stage in Gallagher Square anchors the main performances, with acts including "The Music Notes" (math-themed rap), a fusion energy show from General Atomics, and the Fleet Science Center’s “Don’t Try This at Home” demonstration. Beyond the stage, the venue is organized into specialty zones: Art pavilion: The “A” in STEAM gets its own space. Includes a baby cap knitting station from "The Madhatters" benefiting local children’s hospitals. Robotics round-up: Hands-on robot demonstrations and interactive play for all ages. Cybersecurity zone: Intro-level explorations of digital safety and tech careers. Construction corner: Hands-on building and engineering projects. College & Career connections: Aimed at middle and high schoolers. Panels at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. featuring industry pros and SDSU reps. Pre-K zone: Sensory-focused, age-appropriate activities scaled for the youngest visitors. Slime-making, virtual reality, and rocket launches fill out the general floor.
