  • The Old Globe invites friends and families from San Diego and beyond to celebrate the theatre’s longest resident playwright, William Shakespeare, with the Globe’s annual AXIS Event Happy Birthday, Mr. Shakespeare! on Saturday, April 19 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Globe’s outdoor Copley Plaza in Balboa Park. The Bard’s birthday—his 461st!—is an exciting and festive occasion to celebrate his countless contributions to arts and culture around the world. The festivities will be hosted by our very own Arts Engagement Producer Eric Hagen and Natasha Harris and will include Shakespearean monologues and scenes performed by M.F.A. students from The Old Globe and University of San Diego Shiley Graduate Theatre Program, a fight choreography demonstration and workshop led by Ben Cole, a curated vinyl DJ set from Stevie Ortega accompanied with live instrumentals, an interactive performance and tap dance workshop by DrumatiX, and a crafts station for kids of all ages to enjoy. Plus, all attendees are invited to join in the “Happy Birthday” sing-along celebration with cupcakes. This event is free and open to everyone who wishes to attend. Create a professional arm-rod-and-mouth puppet of your very own from Rene Rubalcava, owner and puppeteer of LV Puppet Studio of Las Vegas who learned the art of puppet making from a Jim Henson Muppeteer. There’s no better time to create your own one-of-a-kind fuzzy monster! In this workshop, we guide you from start to finish as you select, cut, hot glue and assemble the pieces and personality of your own customized puppet. No sewing is required in this workshop. Students bring their puppets to life with their own unique interests and imaginations, and by choice and placement of different face details. Each one is unique! Join us for our conference that aims to bring together scholars from all backgrounds and disciplines – humanities, social and natural sciences, cultural studies, ethnic studies, Indigenous studies, sports studies, etc. in a comprehensive examination of surfing and skateboarding.
