  • TranslĂnea. Gira binacional - UC San Diego Ensamble Cepromusic JosĂ© Luis Castillo, director artĂstico Karola ObermĂĽller traverse Aaron Mencher FACE Alex Taylor figments Ignacio Baca Lobera De La Singularidad V The Center for Experimentation and Production of Contemporary Music (Cepromusic), the leading new music ensemble in Mexico, will make binational musical history this month by offering two concerts at the prestigious Conrad Prebys Concert Hall at the University of California San Diego (UCSD). The performances, scheduled for January 30 and 31 at 7 p.m., will mark a milestone for Cepromusic, as they kick off their first international tour since the COVID 19 pandemic. Both concerts will be free and open to the public. Under the baton of their visionary artistic director JosĂ© Luis Castillo, Cepromusic is proud to present "TranslĂnea. Binational Tour 2024" – a groundbreaking series of concerts that not only celebrates the reemergence of international music making but also marks the ensemble's debut at the renowned UC San Diego venue and their first visit to the US West Coast ever. The tour also includes concerts in the neighboring Mexican cities of Tijuana and Ensenada, yet another first for the Mexico City-based ensemble. The concerts will feature a wide array of adventurous and diverse repertoire, aiming to build a musical bridge between contemporary Mexican composition and global new music. Highlights include works by German composer Karola ObermĂĽller (her first-ever performance on campus since she was hired as a professor at UC San Diego), and by Mexican mavericks Ignacio Baca Lobera and Iván Naranjo. More importantly, Cepromusic will perform compositions by several of the talented graduate students of UC San Diego’s Department of Music – Aaron Mencher, Akari Komura, Alex Taylor, Jiyoung Ko, and Nasim Khorassani. These emerging composers contribute to the rich tapestry of new music, offering a glimpse into the future. The concerts will also feature works by globally acclaimed composers Rebecca Saunders and Liao Lin-Ni, embodying a collaborative spirit that transcends borders. This unique blend of pieces represents a harmonious fusion of cultures, bringing together the diverse influences one can find in the works of Mexican composers, UC San Diego students, and notable figures in the world of new music more broadly. JosĂ© Luis Castillo, the artistic director of Cepromusic, expressed his anticipation saying: "Performing at UC San Diego's Conrad Prebys Concert Hall for the first time is a momentous occasion for Cepromusic. We are thrilled to showcase the talent of our ensemble and the collaborative spirit that defines our musical journey." Don't miss this historic performance at UC San Diego – a celebration of cultural diversity, innovation, and the universal language of music. For more information about TranslĂnea. • SDNVW (San Diego New Verbal Workshop) is a contemporary vocal ensemble inspired by the experimental music tradition of the late 20th century. We perform, improvise, and compose as a collective and frequently work with living composers to explore the unique sonic capabilities of the human voice in concert with instruments, electronics, and movement. This program features several original works by the co-founders Zane S.B. and Dominic Cooper, including a site-specific work for the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla. About San Diego New Music: San Diego New Music is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the public performance of notated music of the highest integrity and artistic caliber from the 20th and 21st centuries. We seek to advance the art form by promoting music composed with conceptual rigor, passionate energy and singular artistic vision. SDNM enriches the artistic culture of San Diego through the presentation of an annual concert series and the soundON Festival of Modern Music, and through fostering its resident performing ensemble, NOISE. In 1994, the only place in San Diego where you could hear an entire concert of 20th-century music was on a college campus. San Diego New Music pitched the idea of a concert series devoted to modern music and 20th-century classics at the Athenaeum. The concerts of modern music perfectly complement the exhibitions of modern art held in the Athenaeum’s galleries. In 1996, San Diego New Music presented its first season. The series was called "Noise at the Library," and the ensemble would later adopt the name, as well. San Diego New Music and the Athenaeum have been happily co-presenting concerts of new music ever since. For more information on the organization go to www.sandiegonewmusic.com.
