WWII vet with Award Bronze Metal for bravery, oldest Marine Corps League member, and fitness pioneer turn 101, 102, 103 — Coronado event July 17 The Coronado Public Library is hosting “100+ A Celebration of Marvelous Lives” — a public panel conversation with three local centenarians, ages 101, 102, and 103. Peggy Price (103), Walt Travis (102), and Bill Hiscock (101). Bill served with the 20th Armored Division in World War II, crossing the Rhine and fighting in the Battle of the Ruhr Pocket before his division helped liberate Dachau. He earned the Combat Infantryman Badge and a Bronze Star for bravery. Walt is the oldest living member of the Marine Corps League. And Peggy has kept fitness at the center of her life since 1968, when she joined one of Coronado’s first community fitness programs — modeled after the Royal Canadian Air Force. Drawing as many as 75 people — a spark that kept her active for the rest of her life. Three centenarians, three very different paths to a hundred plus years — all in one room, sharing their wit and wisdom. The conversation will be led by Cynthia Mendolia, National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach specializing in aging and longevity with special guest Jill Olen, for the National Institute on Aging. This July, Pacific Records Festival will bring together three distinctly different artists whose music reflects the diverse sounds and cultures shaping Southern California today — from beach-rock and island music to harmony-driven Americana. Taking the stage July 19 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kate Sessions Park, Sandollar, Slack Key 'Ohana, and Twilight Highway each have major summer releases arriving this month and offer compelling feature opportunities beyond the festival itself. Blending reggae, surf rock, funk, hip-hop, and Southern California soul, Sandollar has spent nearly two decades creating the soundtrack to San Diego's sand, surf, skate, and live music culture. Their music has been featured on Netflix's OUTER BANKS and CBS's MAGNUM P.I., while their 2023 album "Under The Water" earned Best World Music Album at the San Diego Music Awards. Their new album, "Sunny Day" (July 17), recorded at the prestigious studio 606 owned by Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, features Dizzy Wright and KBong of Stick Figure and showcases the band at a pivotal moment as they bring their signature beach-rock sound to a wider audience. **Note: special hours for exhibition opening - Saturday, June 27, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. This exhibition features quilted works by an artist who holds a high appreciation for Guatemala and Maya culture. The colors and textures of the landscape and the abundance of textiles that the artist observed when exploring this region are interwoven throughout her works. The Maya culture is rich with history and traditions that have persevered through time in spite of hardship and civil wars. They pass on their weaving techniques and incorporate their local symbolism into future generations. The artist, Kathleen McCabe, says, “Guatemala and the Maya culture have a special place in my heart. I have travelled to the highlands numerous times … The Maya people work hard and value family. They live simple lives in simple structures… With this exhibit, I have tried to capture snippets of the Maya colors and textures.
