In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Emmy-nominated journalist, public media host, and filmmaker Elsa E. Sevilla is spotlighting her debut book, "Camera Ready: From Hardship to the Spotlight." Available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble online, the book traces her journey from an uprooted childhood to becoming a pathfinder in university, journalism, business, and documentary filmmaking. Sevilla’s story began in Mexico, where at just five years old her father’s near-fatal accident in San Diego forced the family to relocate. While he fought for his life in the ICU, Sevilla and four of her siblings were placed in a shelter—an experience that marked her life until this day. Starting over in a new country, Sevilla faced the challenges of being a first-generation student with no mentors outside her home. Through instinct, determination, volunteerism, and a passion for storytelling, she turned pain into power. After 18 years as a broadcast journalist, she founded Sevilla Productions, LLC, and launched the Emmy-nominated KPBS/PBS series HISTORIC PLACES WITH ELSA SEVILLA, producing more than 80 documentaries that highlight San Diego’s history and overlooked stories of women and people of color. Today, she is a keynote speaker and author. “My passion for storytelling and history became my compass,” Sevilla said. “When we moved to the U.S., I lost my sense of identity. As I got older, I reconnected with my heritage and found my purpose. 'Camera Ready' is about turning pain into power and showing how our stories root us in where we come from while guiding us to our future.” Sevilla believes history is vital to who we are. Research shows that when students see themselves in culturally relevant curriculum, their engagement can rise by more than 30%. Particle FM presents a special evening of ambient music and sound art at Quint Gallery in La Jolla. The evening will feature Berlin-based musician, DJ, and field recordist Jake Muir, with an opening set by cross-border sound art group New Tongues. Atrevido (Particle FM founder Christian Gonzalez) will open the evening with a DJ set. The event will feature Particle FM’s audiophile 4-speaker Klipsch sound system to create a dynamic listening experience in Quint’s expansive gallery space. He approaches his practice as a listener first, carefully curating, layering and processing sounds that help him deconstruct and contextualize his lived experiences and influences. Using investigative software methodologies, DJ techniques, and dextrous engineering, Muir makes deeply personal sonic art that fluidly traverses genre, encouraging reflection, and sometimes prompting psychedelic states. Muir’s work has been presented at various spaces and festivals including INA-GRM (Paris), Public Records (NYC), Roter Salon (Berlin), Blitz Club (Munich), Human Resources (Los Angeles), The Lab (San Francisco), Honcho Campout (PA), and Sustain Release (NY). His recordings have been published by Sferic Records, Ilian Tape, Enmossed, Dust Editions, Further Records, and Boomkat Editions. His album Bathhouse Blues was included in Pitchfork’s 30 Best Jazz and Experimental Albums of 2023 list. New Tongues is a cross-border sound art group based in Baja, Mexico and San Diego, California. Founded in 2023 by artist/musician Preston Swirnoff with field recordist/sound designer Xareni Lizarraga and violist/producer Kathia Rudametkin, New Tongues is an adventure in interdisciplinary collaboration. With an emphasis on live performance and immersive sound environments, the group uses sound sculptures, field recordings, and traditional instruments to craft electroacoustic song forms that celebrate intimacy, sound ecologies, and deep listening. This performance will feature Swirnoff and Lizarraga as a duo. Noche De Mole is the Sherman Height Community Center’s annual fundraising event. The evening event marks the start of our weeks-long Día de los Muertos celebration, now in its 31st year! Noche de Mole features a dinner menu inspired by a variety of regional moles from Mexico, signature beverages, entertainment, and a special preview of more than 25 community altars. Free Teen Art is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media. Canada Kerwin has worked as a K–Grade 2 art volunteer since 2005, creating age-appropriate lessons that include introduction to art theory and artists’ biographies and tie-in to curricula as needed. Retired from the healthcare field, Canada also served in the US Navy. She applies her background experience to her ongoing art studies at Mira Costa College, focusing on the human form through life drawing and sculpture.
