About the Series: Becoming a Florist is a rotating workshop series built around the wide range of floral designs professional florists create for weddings, events, retail, and everyday work. Each month focuses on a different core floral form—giving participants the opportunity to build real-world design experience across styles, scales, and applications. Throughout the series, you’ll learn professional florist approaches to mechanics, structure, flower care, and design decision-making, along with practical considerations like handling, transport, and longevity. This series is designed to support both arranging hobbyists and working florists looking to expand their technical skills and confidence. Please note: Workshops can be taken as stand-alone classes or as part of a year-long progression through foundational and advanced floral forms. This Month’s Focus: Fall Flower Garland In this workshop, we’ll focus on constructing a fresh flower garland using marigold and carnation blooms. Instruction will cover preparing and handling the flowers, safely threading each bloom, developing color and pattern, and securely finishing the garland. Each participant will receive enough flowers and materials to create eight total feet of blooming garland. You may make one continuous 8-foot garland or divide your materials between two garlands in lengths of your choosing—such as one 3-foot and one 5-foot garland. Who This Class is For: No prior professional experience is required to participate. This workshop is appropriate for all skill levels, and no portfolio or proof of previous classes is needed. Whether you’re exploring floristry as a creative practice, interested in handmade seasonal traditions, or actively working with flowers, this class offers hands-on experience with a versatile floral-design technique. Photographer, fashion illustrator, Oscar-winning costume designer, social caricaturist, and writer Cecil Beaton (1904–1980) was an extraordinary force in the twentieth-century British and American creative scenes. This is the first exhibition dedicated to Beaton’s fashion and portrait photography, which he elevated into an art form. This exhibition showcases Beaton at his most triumphant – from shaping the public image of the “Bright Young Things” (a group of exuberant and artistically inclined socialites in 1920s London) to fashion photography for "Vogue" and other magazines, his vital role as photographer in World War II, and his reinvention of royal portraiture for the modern age, to award-winning costume and set designs for "My Fair Lady" on stage and screen. Via London, Paris, New York, and Hollywood, his era-defining photographs captured beauty, glamour, and star power in the interwar and early post-war eras. "Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World" features portraits of some of the twentieth century’s most iconic and glamorous figures, including Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marlon Brando; Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret; as well as stars of the artistic and literary scenes, Truman Capote, Francis Bacon, and Salvador Dalí. The SAMAHAN Filipino American Performance Arts & Education Center will present its 39th annual Philippine Cultural Arts Festival on the Presidents Way Lawn along Park Boulevard in Balboa Park at 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 22 and on Sunday, August 23. Admission is FREE. This beloved community Festival is made possible through generous grant funding from the Dr. Lolita D. Carter Endowment administered by the San Diego Foundation, support from the County of San Diego Supv. District 4, Community Enhancement Program, and contributions from individual donors. Dubbed SamaFest 2026, the festival is a family-oriented celebration centered on cultural heritage, vibrant entertainment and meaningful networking. Held at a strategic, accessible location in Balboa Park, the festival has consistently attracted a large and diverse crowd of park visitors over the years. It offers San Diego locals as well as tourists a welcoming opportunity to discover and appreciate Philippine culture and performing arts through traditional dances and live music. This two-day event showcases vibrant folk and ethnic dances from various regions of the Philippines, performed by the graceful dancers of SAMAHAN Arts and accompanied by the lively sounds of the SAMAHAN Rondalla, Kulintang and Gangsa (gong) Music Ensembles. Each dance and ethnic ritual is brought to life with colorful, beautifully crafted traditional and regional attire, specially worn for each performance. The festivities also feature mainstream entertainment, including contemporary dance numbers, vocal acts by local guest artists, and thrilling martial arts demonstrations. Adding to the experience are visual art displays by local creators, vendors selling handmade crafts, books, and unique goods, along with a mouthwatering selection of Filipino and Asian fusion dishes and desserts, including the ever-popular halo-halo. As Asian Americans we are continually navigating our identities, weaving together our ancestral heritage with our current day lives. Through this festival, AAPI dance artists tell stories of family, heritage, immigration, colonization, and assimilation. We recognize what we as Asian and Pacific Islanders inherit, what we take on, and what we let go of. We embrace our journey to become not just Asians and Pacific Islanders in America, but to become Asian Americans...finding our identity and place in this tapestry of cultures. AADF2026 EVENTS & DESCRIPTION Dance Film Screening: Sunday, Aug. 30, 5-8:30 p.m. at Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD - La Jolla) - Curated dance films by AAPI artists, as well as international films by Asian artists will be screened, with a panel discussion following immediately afterwards. 2 Audience Choice Awards and 1 Critics Choice Award (jury panel) will be announced on the last day of the festival. Collaborative Residency Showcase: Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. at Light Box Theater (Liberty Station) - AADF supports local artists, providing opportunities for early to mid-career AAPI dance makers to not only present work, but also explore their unique identities, collaborate with other artists, and engage with the AAPI community in a supportive environment. This showcase presents the culminating work of the AADF2026 choreographic residents’ 7-month artistic journey into identity and dance making. Community Day: New date: Saturday, Oct. 3 (time: TBD) at City Heights Performance Annex & Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park - An all-day free event, Community Day invites local AAPI student and community artists to share short dance pieces alongside cultural dance troupes, representing the broad diversity of the Asian and Pacific Islander diaspora. Dance artists also offer classes from the stage for audiences to participate in, while dance and cultural organizations set-up booths to distribute information and offer family friendly activities. Mainstage Showcase: Saturday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at Saville Theater (San Diego City College) - A curated evening of live dance, invited dance makers share personal works that touch on their experience of living multi-culturally. These AAPI choreographers represent different cultural backgrounds and create work in various dance disciplines. Each are inspirational and accomplished artists in their own right.
