You will make your own Mexican piñata, paint an African cheetah, fold Japanese origami, draw an Icelandic puffin, paint the pyramids of Egypt, create a San Diego collage, and paint your own Australian tropical fish. We will use watercolor and acrylic paints, origami and decorative papers, tissue paper, crayons, markers, and pencils. June Rubin has been teaching art for over 30 years. She is a graduate of both the University of California, Los Angeles and Art Center College of Design with degrees in art and cultural anthropology. "BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions" is adapted from a video art installation by Kahlil Joseph. The work is presented as a cinematic experience structured to resemble the sonic qualities of a record album. It combines fictional and historical elements in an immersive format that features fictionalized portrayals of W. E. B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey, alongside appearances by artists, musicians, members of Joseph's family, and material drawn from Twitter chats, collectively forming a vision centered on Black consciousness. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Kahlil Joseph (Director), Onye Anyanwu (Producer), King Britt (Prof. of Music), and Brian Cross (Prof. of Visual Arts), 6:30 - 8 p.m. Co-Presented by the Department of Visual Arts and IDEAS at UC San Diego.

By blending visual art, performance, and artificial intelligence, the project centers the global evolution of vogue while honoring Black and queer resistance and calling for a more liberated future.

The history of illuminated manuscripts is filled with beauty and intrigue. These hand-written books which were prized throughout Europe, had painted embellishments and often utilized precious metals such as gold and silver. The pages of these miniature works of art were made up of animal skins called vellum. Illuminated manuscripts were produced in Europe between 1100-1600, and often originated from monasteries or were commissioned by wealthy individuals who wanted them for their personal libraries. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, upper class patrons supported the creation of private workshops that flourished primarily in French and Italian cities and their surrounding courts such as Bruges. One has only to look at the masterpiece, "Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc De Berry" by the noted Limbourg Brothers, to understand how amazing and prized these handmade books became. By 1440 however, their popularity began to diminish with the ability to mass produce books with the advent of the printing press. In this docent-led virtual talk, important manuscripts will be discussed along with their influence on the art of the late Medieval and early Renaissance. Timken Museum of Art on Facebook / Instagram
