This series is for anyone navigating grief, loss, or life transitions, and seeking a gentle, creative, community-centered space to process - all types of grief are welcome! This three-week series offers a supportive space to gently explore grief through both guided group processing and hands-on creative practice. Each session is co-facilitated with a therapist and arts educator and integrates reflection, conversation, and craft as pathways toward healing, connection, and transformation. Together, we will move through different layers of grief — how it lives in the body, how it reshapes identity, and how it can evolve into meaning and growth. No prior art experience is needed; this is not about creating something “perfect,” but about engaging in a process that supports expression and integration. Session 1 (4/12): Grief in the Body — What Are You Holding? We’ll explore how grief is carried physically and emotionally, and create a pocket grief altar — a small, personal object to hold what feels present. Session 2 (4/19): Identity After Loss — Who Are You Now? This session focuses on the ways loss can reshape our sense of self. Through the practice of kintsugi (repairing with intention), we’ll reflect on brokenness, continuity, and reimagining identity. Session 3 (4/26): Transformation — Carrying It Forward We’ll explore post-traumatic growth, the evolution of love, and what it means to move forward while still honoring what has been lost. Participants will create a mosaic planter and plant something new — a living symbol of growth and continuation.

Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) will host the “Igniting Hope, Building CommUNITY Family & Friends Festival" on Saturday, May 2, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Liberty Station Central Promenade (2641 Truxtun Rd, San Diego, CA 92106). In recognition of Foster Care Awareness Month, the free, community-centered event will bring together nonprofit organizations, community leaders, volunteers, and young people looking for a path to success for an afternoon of connection, celebration, and collaboration. Moving beyond a traditional resource fair, the festival is designed as an immersive experience that strengthens connections across people and services. It focuses on building a more coordinated and accessible support system for transition-age foster youth and other underserved populations. The event will bring together hundreds of young people seeking pathways to stability, alongside community leaders, families, and friends working to build meaningful relationships and advance a more connected, solutions-based model of support. Attendees from the broader community will also have the opportunity to connect with organizations, explore volunteer opportunities, and learn how to get involved in supporting local youth. The event will feature approximately 40 participating organizations offering resources across a wide range of services, including housing, education, job training, mental health support, financial literacy, and health services. Participating organizations will engage directly with attendees, showcase their impact, and connect with other peer organizations to identify gaps they can address together, helping to build stronger, more collaborative partnerships. Attendees can expect a lively, family-friendly atmosphere with live entertainment, interactive experiences, and local food. The event will feature a performance by San Diego-based artist Divina Jasso, along with entertainment from magician The Amazing Dana. Guests can also participate in yoga sessions, enjoy an open-air glam booth, and hear directly from two JIT youth speakers sharing their personal stories. A lineup of local food trucks, including Dirty Birds, Born in Brooklyn, Dilly’s Ice Cream, and Juicy Shawarma, will be on-site throughout the event. More than just a one-day event, “Igniting Hope, Building CommUNITY” represents a broader shift toward collaboration in the nonprofit sector, bringing organizations together to better serve individuals who need a reliable, connected network of support. It was the summer of 1979 and Disco had taken over the world. For the first time, Black, gay and female artists were dominating the charts. But a backlash was brewing. On a July night in 1979, nearly 50,000 White teenagers descended on Chicago’s Comiskey Park for “Disco Demolition Night,” where they destroyed records made by mostly Black artists. Many say that the birth of house music comes from this fateful evening. Mixing cinematic recreation, archival materials, and revelatory interviews with the pioneers of house music, MOVE YA BODY: THE BIRTH OF HOUSE tells this story in a new way, offering a celebration of the power the dance floor has to liberate us all, and an appreciation of the artists that kept the beat going all night long. "More Than Rhythm: A Black Music Series" is an engaging public library film series exploring the sweeping history and evolution of African diasporic music. It traces the journey of rhythm and sound from the West African roots of the banjo to the electronic beats of modern house and funk music.
