An evening with Mr. Poe and Other Authors of the Macabre WRITE OUT LOUD, an organization founded in 2007 with a commitment to inspire, challenge and entertain by reading literature aloud for audiences of all ages, announces “Poe and His Progeny,” at the Villa Montezuma Museum in Sherman Heights. This historic Queen Anne Victorian was named “The Palace of the Arts," by Jessie Shepard, the musician, spiritualist and author who designed it in 1887. Performances will take place on October 25, 26, 31 and November 1. There are three performances each evening at 6 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tickets are $30. Necking has been a free-punk improvising collective since 2004. For this event, they’ve invited like-minded collaborators, including past members, to participate in a series of stunts that break Necking into its composite parts and themes. This five chapter essay will cite influences lofty and lowly, using the language of some of our best misfits! Known for its freely rotating lineup built around a few central members, the collective now proudly features Amy Cimini, Nick Lesley, and Nathan Berlinguette. Their signature free-punk sound is a raw, communal form of improvisation that’s fast and loud, exhausting and cathartic; it’s a celebration of friendship and creative spontaneity. During our Chocolate Making Classes you will learn, create, eat and laugh! We offer chocolate making classes for adults and children 5 years and older*. Our hands-on chocolate making classes are about 1 ½- 2 hours long and limited to 10 students (or 10 child/ parent teams). There you will learn the basics of working with chocolate, create your own bark, molded chocolates and more. During class, students will play with favorite flavors like salted caramel and peanut butter cup and select monthly themed flavors made by chocolatier Michelle Lomelin. Students will also select from more than two dozen ingredients as they personalize a chocolate bark – with favorite flavors including freeze dried fruits and savory pretzels, potato chips and a wide selection of nuts. Plus, you will get to keep all your creations! Our chocolate making classes are offered one Saturday a month and each month has its own theme. As Part of the Far South Border North Grant Katie Ruiz, The founder of the Pompom Project engaged the community throughout the city of San Diego in Craft making- Pompom workshops. Ruiz's ongoing Pompom Project engages diverse communities in a collaborative creative process. The experience of coming together to create with one's hands and working towards a shared goal promotes investment and pride in community and shared spaces. Through the communal act of making, strangers come together to work for a common goal resulting in relationship building and community care. Hundreds of participants produced over 1000 pompoms during 8 public workshops over the last four months. The free workshops offered lessons on "Craftivism" a term coined by Betsy Greer in 2003 which refers to craft and activism coming together through art. The Pompoms have been installed in two locations; Sew Loka, a textile store in Logan Heights that focuses on slow fashion and community building, and Villa Merced, senior community room, a branch of Casa Familiar. Sew Loka comprises partners Claudia Biezunski Rodriguez and Manny Biezunski, both of whom are artist. Claudia makes one of one clothing items from recycled and reclaimed materials. Manny is a videographer and marketing person who created a documentary of the pompom project FBSN grant process. The reveal of the public facing art installation and the documentary will be on view at the reception on May 25, 2024 from 12 - 6 p.m. During the reception you are invited to view the new Pompom installation, watch the documentary of the process, make your own pompom, and view one of a kind Sew Loka fashions. VOXVOXVOX is the final installment in our monthly series of experimental concerts at Bread & Salt. Local singers Michelle Gallardo-Arias, Mariana Flores Bucio, Jonathan Nussman and Miguel Zazueta will present an evening of contemporary solo works that explore the expressive possibilities of the unaccompanied human voice. VOXOXVOX is a concert of works that zero in on the sound of the human voice and explore its boundless lyrical, expressive, instrumental and percussive qualities. Curated by Jonathan Nussman, these works free the singer from the confines of traditional accompaniment, unlocking each individual artist’s creativity by combining new and familiar sounds in surprising ways. The concert features singers from San Diego and Tijuana, including sopranos Michelle Gallardo-Arias and Mariana Flores Bucio, baritone Jonathan Nussman, and tenor Miguel Zazueta. This eclectic program includes music by Carolyn Chen, Gilda Lyons, Georges Apperghis, and a world premiere by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Roger Reynolds.
