Create your own ceramic mug this season! Saturdays, November 22, 3-6 p.m. (build) & December 6, 2-4 p.m. (glaze) In this hands-on 2-part class, students will learn the slab-building method to create a functional ceramic mug from start to finish. We’ll cover rolling and cutting clay slabs, shaping and joining forms with the help of cylindrical supports, and attaching handles that are both sturdy and comfortable to hold. Students will also have the opportunity to personalize their mug with texture, carving, or underglaze decoration. By the end of class, each participant will have a unique handmade mug that will be glazed and fired for everyday use. This workshop is perfect for beginners, as well as those looking to refresh their clay handbuilding skills. Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after the last class. Beginners welcome. A curated evening of live dance, AAPI dance makers present works that tell stories of “Becoming Asian American”. This year's invited choreographers work primarily in modern and contemporary dance forms. Each come from different cultural backgrounds and are inspirational and accomplished artists in their own right. Together, they will present an evening of profound sharing and deep questioning. We hope audiences will come away with a richer understanding and appreciation of our AAPI communities and identities. Learn to Warp & Weave! Saturday, November 15, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. (with 1 hour lunch break) Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a Rigid Heddle Loom and natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, Weaver & Dyer Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn how: a rigid heddle loom works; to plan a textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.); to warp a rigid heddle; to weave; to remove your handwoven; and to finish a textile. Nearly two years since their last San Diego show, Stick Men — featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, and Markus Reuter — return to the Bornemann Theatre in San Marcos for a special holiday weekend performance. Formed in 2007, this progressive rock supergroup is known for its bold sound built around touch-style instruments like the Chapman Stick and the custom U8 guitar. Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) anchors the trio with his legendary mastery of the Stick, while Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mr. Mister) fuses acoustic and electronic percussion, and Reuter adds depth and atmosphere through his innovative compositions. Together, the band’s members have contributed to records selling over 100 million copies worldwide. Opening the night is acclaimed Chapman Stick artist Tom Griesgraber, joined by guitarist Andre Cholmondeley of Project/Object. Griesgraber’s genre-defying performances and collaborations with artists like Steve Hackett, Al Di Meola, and California Guitar Trio promise an unforgettable start to the evening. Participants have a chance to show off their creativity, build problem-solving skills, and gain new technology skills.
