Volunteers needed on Stewardship Saturday—a weekly opportunity to help restore and care for the historic montane forests of Volcan Mountain. Join our reforestation team for a full day on the mountain as we plant the next generation of trees. Volunteers will help establish coulter pine, bigcone Douglas-fir, and incense cedar across priority restoration sites. The day begins at 8 a.m. at VMF's Sky Island basecamp with coffee, a short orientation, and hands-on training in silviculture best practices. We’ll introduce the landscape, explain how planting locations are selected, and share how volunteers contribute to our broader restoration strategy. For those interested, optional sessions will also explore place-based decision-making, field data entry, adaptive management, and long-term monitoring. After orientation, volunteers will form small planting crews and head into the field to begin hard, fun work on the mountain! Planting will wrap up around 2:30 p.m. (earlier departures are always fine). Afterwards, we’ll gather just 10 minutes down Wynola Road for an informal Happy Hour at Calico Cidery, an organic orchard-based taproom serving natural wine, farm-style cider, and local non-alcoholic beverages. With 90 musical acts spread across three neighborhoods and 26 stages, there’s no single version of this day. On April 25, 2026, AABA will host the free musical walkabout, Adams Avenue Unplugged. This event features 90 live musical performances inside restaurants, bars, and coffee houses along a two-mile stretch of Adams Avenue from University Heights on the West, through Normal Heights, and into parts of Kensington to the East. It also has performances outdoors at various patio locations, including the Smitty’s Food Court and Lestat’s Coffeehouse. The AABA hopes to treat musical aficionados and foodies to the rich neighborhood culture. Adams Avenue Unplugged is free and open to the general public, with the exception of Alejandro Escovedo's ticketed performance at the Main Stage. The historic Normal Heights United Church hosts the Main Stage and the Community Beer Garden where you can take advantage of the VIP Food & Drink Deal for $25. Parking is limited to residential neighborhood streets and can get congested. MTS bus routes 2 and 11 services the neighborhoods. A new study has found that the National Guard's presence in Washington, D.C. had no effect on violent crime in the city. The Guard has been deployed since last August as part of a federal task force to fight crime, and their numbers are set to double in the coming weeks.

Enjoy pirate themed pool activities and games during the City of Carlsbad’s annual Pirate Plunge event. Come dressed in a swimsuit and enjoy the swashbuckling activities which include diving for treasure, ship raider race, walking the plank, and other fun pool activities and floating obstacles. The Splash Pad will also be open for the little ones. Dry activities include a pirate ship slide, a photo op and a treasure hunt where children will have the chance to follow a map around the decks collecting treasure along the way. Tickets are $15 per person and kids ages 3 and under are free but still need to be registered. Pick up your wristbands in advance at Alga Norte Aquatic Center during the week before the event, to avoid lines. Food will be available for purchase. For safety reasons, only pool noodles and US Coastguard approved floatation devices are allowed in the pool. Online presale ends at 5 p.m. on the Friday before the event. You will be able to purchase wristbands at the event if the event is not sold out. Save time and avoid lines by picking up event wristbands in advance. Wristbands will be available for pick up starting the week before the event and are only available at Alga Norte Aquatics Center during regular business hours. All sales are final; no refunds.
