In this rigid heddle loom workshop, students will learn to weave their own unique handwoven fabric in both plain weave (a classic, simple pattern) and clasped weft (where two wefts interconnect, creating unique patterns). Each student will learn the basics of how the loom works, a variety of simple weaving techniques, plain weave, clasped weft weaving, and finally, hemstitching for a finished piece. Students will weave a length of handwoven fabric of their choosing using the techniques in-class. Looms will be pre-warped in this class and students will weave together on Ashford Looms with 100% cotton fiber for a fiber-friendly afternoon. Beginners, as well as those with weaving experience are welcome. No experience necessary. It asks: What does it mean to be emotionally visible in a world that often demands detachment? Vanessa Rishel invites viewers to explore vulnerability and softness through her most recent and experimental works. Drawing on personal memory, sensory perception, and speculative imagination, her practice negotiates the thresholds between inner affect and external expression. Through color, and spatial arrangement, Rishel creates atmospheres that oscillate between comfort and unease—spaces where emotion is not only seen, but felt.
