Sunday, September 13, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Beginners welcome! Ages 13+ welcome! In this fun, hands-on class Instructor Marley Peifer will guide students in learning how to identify and illustrate several common plant families of San Diego. After warming up and learning about botany, students will dive into individual projects based on specimens and photos. Each student will leave with an illustration of their chosen plant, as well as the skills and motivation to continue an independent learning journey through the botanically-rich playground that is San Diego. Even complete beginners will feel empowered after this class. Before Class: Students are welcome to bring any drawing tools they already use and feel comfortable with. It’s also highly recommended that students bring a few photos of plants they’ve taken—whether from a hike, your garden, or around your neighborhood. If you don’t have plant photos, you’re welcome to work from live specimens found in or near the organic garden at San Diego Craft Collective. If you plan to take photos before class, please arrive 15–30 minutes early to stroll through the garden and capture images. The organic garden is located on Roosevelt Road, next to the Dorothea Laub Building, and is easy to spot by its colorful pencil fence. The concert opens with Maurice Ravel’s “Rigaudon” from "Le Tombeau de Couperin," a brilliant tribute to 18th century French dance. Its crisp rhythms and buoyant energy capture Ravel’s unmatched craftsmanship and grace. The mood turns tender and poetic with Nino Rota’s Concerto for Harp and Orchestra, performed by our own Julie Phillips, a rarely heard gem by the beloved composer of film scores such as The Godfather. In this work, Rota’s distinctive lyricism and cinematic color take center stage, as the solo harp shimmers over a tapestry of orchestral warmth – by turns playful, nostalgic, and dreamlike. The evening concludes with the monumental Symphony No. 5 by Dmitri Shostakovich. Written under intense political scrutiny, the symphony moves through haunting introspection, defiant struggle, and ultimately, a cathartic triumph. It remains one of the most powerful and emotionally charged works of the 20th century – an unforgettable testament to music’s ability to speak truth and transcend hardship. Our 2026 CREATE production asks these questions through original contemporary and hip-hop dance pieces, interwoven with performance poetry and visual art. When transcenDANCE students spoke with local San Diego changemakers early this year, they learned about creative resistance, the many ways they as individuals can engage in changemaking, and what it takes to start and sustain change. Through Harvesting Hope, they share their inspiration, creativity, and ideas for collective action.
