Storytellers of San Diego take the Moxie stage and break the fourth wall! This event is more than a Shakespearean aside to the audience. Storytellers directly engage the audience, and take their cues from the audience, wrapping all in the cast spell of Midsummer's Tales. An evening is told out with personal tales, folkloric and literary tales; something for everyone. Midsummer's tale tellers are Lissette Ryan with harp and Tyler Turner, Fred Laskowski, Tammy Burmeister, David Schmidt, Mindy Donner, and Kirk Faulkner. Storytellers of San Diego thank the Moxie Theatre and the Prebys Foundation Grant: Venues and Spaces. This event is not a Moxie Theatre production. Ages 12 and up. More pets go missing during the Independence Day holiday than any other time of the year. Frightened by fireworks and festivities, pets may flee their homes and hundreds of them will end up in local shelters, according to SDHS.

Streetwear style and SD soccer culture combine at the Saturdays Football pop-up at Ballast Point Brewing in Little Italy from Thursday, September 10 through Sunday, September 13! With storefronts in LA and NYC and pop-ups across the US, Saturdays has built a cult following among diehard soccer fans and streetwear fashion enthusiasts for their vintage jerseys and timeless soccer kits spanning from old-school club icons to modern-day masterpieces. The pop up at Ballast Point will feature vintage jerseys, Saturdays apparel and special collaborative pieces, including Ballast Point hats hand-finished with Saturdays patches and branding, created live during the pop-up. Ballast Point has long served as a gathering place for San Diego's soccer community, rooting for local clubs and teams like the San Diego Wave FC and SDFC. Antonio Estévez’s "Mediodía en el llano" (1942) captures the heat and stillness of Venezuela’s central plains, Los Llanos. Originally part of a three movement suite portraying dawn, midday, and evening, it evokes the bright intensity of noon on the expansive grasslands, suffused with lyrical beauty and local color. Finnish composer Esa Pekka Salonen’s "kinema," written in 2021, is a gentle clarinet concerto drawn from film music created during the pandemic. Its five movements – Dawn, Theme and Variations, Pérotin Dream, J.D. in memoriam, and Return – move from shimmering light to reflective lyricism and renewal. Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from "West Side Story" transforms his landmark Broadway score into a symphonic suite that distills the story’s passion, violence, and reconciliation, brimming with rhythm and theatrical brilliance. Rachmaninoff’s "Symphonic Dances" (1940), his final composition, reflects on a lifetime of memory and exile. Written in America yet steeped in nostalgia for Russia, its sweeping melodies and radiant conclusion – echoing his "All Night Vespers" – proclaim a final “Hallelujah.” Together, these four works create a journey across lands and eras, celebrating color, movement, and the enduring human voice in music. This class meets weekly on Mondays, 3-4 times each month, from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Ages 6-12 years welcome! This 4-week, repeatable series is perfect for kids who love to make things! Children learn tool safety, and get acquainted with various woodworking hand tools and techniques. They learn about wood as a material, and how to properly glue, hammer nails, and use manual drills. The goal of this class is to build children’s confidence through woodcraft. The focus for younger children is creating patience, developing fine motor skills, material exploration, and safe, proper use of the tools. More mature students will increase their focus to include craftsmanship, and more challenging methods of building projects and problem-solving. We will work together in the same space, but age groups/projects will be divided into two groups based on age and level of maturity. This class uses mostly hand tools. We teach safe methods for sawing, drilling, and clamping wood in this class. We encourage children to disconnect from screen-time conversations and video game thinking during our time together. This is a time for children to slow down, figure out tools, how they work, and make functional objects with their own hands. Occasionally, we use a plug-in tool with students (like a drill press). These machines are used 1-on-1 with students and instructors. If you prefer your child not use plug-in tools, just let us know!
