  • Home Start, a local nonprofit committed to helping San Diego’s most underserved and vulnerable, is bringing cheer to local families in need during the holiday season by partnering with One Paseo for its annual holiday toy drive. The toy drive runs from now until December 13 at One Paseo (3725 Paseo Place, Carmel Valley, 92130). Members of the community can get into the holiday spirit by dropping off new, unwrapped toys for children of all ages. Wrapping supplies are also being accepted as a great addition to donations. The donation bin will be placed next to One Paseo’s red vintage Winter Studebaker Truck, next to the firepit. Donations can be made from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Once the toy drive wraps up, One Paseo’s trolley will transform into a gifting sleigh. Decked out with festive decor and filled with gifts collected from the community, Santa and team will drive the trolley down to Home Start’s Mission Valley headquarters parking lot. The toys will go to local families Home Start has worked with throughout the year to provide life-changing services including housing, parenting education, and therapy. Home Start serves children from infants to age 18, and One Paseo’s goal is to provide the Home Start team with hundreds of new, unwrapped gifts. “We are most grateful for One Paseo’s generous support and continued partnership,” Laura Tancredi-Baese, Home Start CEO, shares. “Together, One Paseo, its patrons, and team Home Start will help bring smiles to hundreds of deserving local children and parents this holiday season.” For more information about the Toy Drive, please visit https://www.onepaseo.com/events/home-start-toy-drive/. • The Fleet Science Center welcomes the new school year with an Educator Open House on Thursday, September 14. This inspiring evening at the Fleet Science Center invites all San Diego County educators to explore the galleries, including the wildly popular The Worst-Case Scenario: Survival Experience, engage in professional development opportunities, get creative in the Fleet’s makerspace Studio X, and importantly, preview the Fleet’s latest addition to its very in-demand Don’t Try This At Home science assembly show, Scientific Serenade. Scientific Serenade, suitable for grades kindergarten through six, focuses on sound waves, exploring the relationships between pitch and frequency, amplitude and volume, and speed and intensity. Fleet education professionals lead an investigation and visualization of sound through participants’ eyes and ears in this high-energy, louder-than-life show. Students (and educators) can: Explore the components of sound and how they all combine to create the beautiful (and not-so-beautiful) sounds that we hear every day. Experience the use of a wide array of items in engaging experiments to experience sound in a whole new way. Hear that this show is simply too loud to try at home! Educators also will get a chance to connect with each other as well as members of the Fleet education department about resources, offerings and special events that can make their classroom and school activities even more engaging. Educators are welcome to bring up to two guests, including children. Light refreshments will be served. The Fleet Science Center’s myriad education offerings are just one more way the Fleet fulfills its mission of connecting everyone in San Diego to the power of science. • From the KPBS weekend arts preview: Currently on view at the Athenaeum in La Jolla is a site-specific exhibition by Minneapolis-based artist Anne Labovitz that feels immersive. Massive, vividly-hued textiles are suspended from the Athenaeum's ceiling beams, and large wall works play with light, color and space. Details: On view through Jan. 13, 2024. 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Athenaeum Music and Arts Library, 1008 Wall St., La Jolla. Free. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the museum: About the exhibition: Inspired by the blue cast of twilight, Anne Labovitz uses light and its profound meanings in various contexts as the central construct of The Blue Hour. Small libraries, illuminated windows, and Tyvek sculptures explore physical and metaphorical luminosity, color, and materiality, inviting visitors to experience serenity and emergent energy. Labovitz aims to respond to today’s world by challenging isolation, loneliness, and disconnection through activating color and light in large-scale works. “Light and color are connected and are central tenets in my artistic practice and are often what engages viewers at first glance,” she says. “In a world that can be dark, there is something undeniably captivating about the allure of light. But what does it mean for something to be luminous? Luminosity, at its core, is the quality of radiating or reflecting light. These works were created specifically for the Athenaeum to provide viewers a moment of pause, contemplation, and awe.” Local context and creating connections with others are elements embodied in the artist’s creative process and public interventions. About the artist: Anne Labovitz received a BA in art and psychology, with a minor in art education and art history, from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, and an MFA from Transart, Plymouth University, in New York City and Berlin. She has an extensive national and international exhibition history. Upcoming and current projects include solo exhibitions at the Minnesota State Capitol (2024); 122 Conversations: Person to Person, Art Beyond Borders at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport; and the I Love You Institute. Labovitz’s work is held in many private and public collections, including the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport; Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota; the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis; the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, Winona; the Minnesota Museum of American Art, St. Paul; the Tweed Museum of Art, Duluth, Minnesota; the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, La Jolla, California; the Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul; the International Portrait Gallery, Bosnia-Herzegovina; Växjö Konsthall, Sweden; Isumi City Offices, Japan; the University of Raparin, Rania Iraqi Kurdistan; and the City of Petrozavodsk, Russia. Labovitz is currently an adjunct professor and mentor in the MFA program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Related links: Athenaeum Music & Arts Library: website | Instagram | Facebook
