Mission Valley, an open-air shopping center located in San Diego, California (https://www.mission-valley.com), is proud to partner with World Vision, a global humanitarian organization, to support Los Angeles fire victims on Friday, January 17, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the parking lot in front of Village Shops (Jared's, Chipotle, and Corner Bakery). World Vision will have a truck on-site to collect donations, which will be directly transported to LA relief centers. The community is encouraged to drop off non-perishable food, water bottles, clothing, blankets, bedding, personal hygiene items, diapers, baby formula, first aid kits, prescription medications, N95 masks, tents, sleeping bags, monetary donations, gift cards, pet food, and other pet items.

Southern-bred, alternative R&B singer-songwriter Mereba artistically embodies self-understanding on "The Breeze Grew a Fire", her grandest work and first release on "Secretly Canadian". To hone in on this latest album, it was necessary for Mereba to reconnect with her whole many-sided self, from her inner child to her inseparable relationships. Mereba peacefully transmutes her beginnings, looking upon her closest kinships and friendships with a keen understanding of their steadying, inspirational force. Surrounded by the gentle Breeze of these relationships and recollections, Mereba is empowered as both an artist and mother, while also being reminded to nurture her childlike wonder. Mereba gracefully shines on the follow-up to her bounteous 2019 debut, "The Jungle Is the Only Way Out". In escaping the Jungle, Mereba faced the paradigm shift of birthing a son in 2021 and getting accustomed to a rapidly changing self-outlook. Mereba’s creative output has always relied on her innermost reflections and ideas on whatever was happening around her; but in motherhood, the singer’s perspective widened while her inspiration became more focused, and more individually powerful. “Even though I'm fully an adult, I had to grow up in a way overnight when he [my son] came,” Mereba explains. “The process of watching him open up to the world, learn how to engage with the world, it is very tender. I feel like it's the most reminded I've ever been of when I was a child and the first memories I have of life.” The transformation brought Mereba to the intimacy of DIY recording sessions, providing an honest and organic foundation to Breeze. Mereba tapped her longtime production collaborator Sam Hoffman to co-assemble the album’s rich production, which parallels its folk-like warmth. Although Mereba is a true double Earth sign–Virgo and Virgo rising–the development of "Breeze" was anchored by experiences and memories that span from Atlanta to L.A., Addis Ababa to Greensboro, an intention that speaks to the album’s fluid nature. Sim Bruce Richards drew from his respect for Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Irving J. Gill to design homes, commercial buildings, and sacred spaces of wood, glass, and adobe across San Diego County. His passion for Native American, Aztec, and Mayan culture, as well as Japanese architecture, landscape, and craft, greatly influenced over 200 projects unique to our region. Wishing to create living and working environments that delight all the senses, Richards imbued a number of his projects with built-in art by James Hubbell, Rhoda LeBlanc Lopez, and others. This presentation unveils his architectural spirit through tales of Richards’ unique client-architect relationships. About the presenters: Presenters include Dr. Mark Hargreaves, Rector of St. James-by-the-Sea in La Jolla, Hallie Swenson an architectural designer in San Diego, Keith York, an architectural writer and real estate agent specializing in architect designed homes, and independent curator Dave Hampton. Hargreaves, author of The Sacred Architecture of Irving J. Gill. (2023), was inspired by a lifelong interest in the visual arts to complete a master's degree at The National Gallery and King's College in London on the topic of Christianity and the arts. Since moving to San Diego, he has had a keen interest in capturing the architectural history of San Diego. Hallie Swenson studied traditional architecture and urbanism in England at University of Buckingham, the architectural history of England at the University of Cambridge, King's College, and Roman architecture at the University of Notre Dame, Rome. She contributed an essay to Clive Aslet’s book The Academy, which celebrates the work of renowned traditionalist architect John Simpson. A native San Diegan, Keith York, is an expert on the city’s postwar modernist movement in architecture and design, writing frequently on the subject. For KPBS, he produced documentaries and feature reports on architects Irving Gill and Richard Requa and artist-craftsman James Hubbell. He has served as a volunteer, donor, curator and consultant to the San Diego Architectural Foundation, San Diego Museum of Art, La Jolla Historical Society, San Diego History Center, Oceanside Museum of Art, Balboa Art Conservation Center and Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO).
