  • Jed Fielding’s in-your-face street portraiture will take you right into his subjects' vivid lives. Getting in close range, his portraits allows us to feel these intimate interactions, moving beyond traditional photojournalism into personal encounters. His curious subjects reach for each other and for the photographer, too —at times it might feel like they’re reaching for us as well. In this exhibition, the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) visitors will see early works by Fielding, in addition to sections focused on his work in Naples, Italy and with blind students in Mexico City. A publication will accompany the exhibition and be available for sale through MOPA’s store. Date | Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Location | Museum of Photographic Arts The exhibit is available through September 25. Pay what you wish admission. For more information, please visit mopa.org/exhibitions/encounter-photographs-jed-fielding or call (619) 238-7559.

  • “Hollywoodland” pays homage to the undeniable influence of Hollywood on culture and music. This program traces the influence of the “Hollywood” sound on Rachmaninoff’s iconic Symphonic Dances, the jazz obsession of Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin, the romantic minimalism of Polina Nazaykinskaya’s cinematic “Nostalgia,” and the Oscar-nominated score by Hans Zimmer, The Interstellar. These diverse composers have in common the influence of the uniquely American art forms of jazz and minimalism, while their musical narratives are guided by principles of motion picture storytelling. The show will be narrated by Jacopo and Konstantin with a moderated Q&A at the end. Date | Friday, October 14 at 8 p.m. Location | The Baker-Baum Concert Hall at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center Get tickets here! Ticket prices ranging from $25.50 to $58.
