Cardboard Superheroes Weekend Workshop January 15 & 16, Noon - 5 p.m. Build your favorite pop-culture characters out of cardboard -- such as Wall-E, Minecraft Steve, Captain America's Shield, Thor's Hammer, PAC-MAN, and more with Cardboard Superheroes, a non-profit that promotes the arts in education. In this special 2-day workshop only at the Comic-Con Museum, come meet the teenage founders of Cardboard Superheroes, Connor Lee and Bauer Lee, who have been building life-sized models since they were in 4th grade. They have extended their collection to include HulkBuster armor, C-3PO, Groot, and more! As an added bonus, you can make your own special effects action video with SEARCH Your Voice , an organization helping kids build confidence and become better public speakers. Celebrate the holiday season by creating a traditional Filipino parol! A parol is a Filipino ornamental lantern displayed during the holidays. The word is derived from the Spanish word “farol” which translates to “lantern.” The parol symbolizes light over darkness, so by hanging a parol you’re bringing hope, positivity and love into your home during this festive season. The parol was originally made with strips of bamboo and papel de japon or tissue paper, but for Family Sunday we are going to do a modified version with paper straws and pipe cleaners! This workshop will be led by Alex and Raena Castro, members of the PASACAT Philippine Performing Arts Company based in National City. PASACAT is an acronym for Philippine American Society and Cultural Arts Troupe and is celebrating 51 amazing years of Philippine song, music and dance. The company's mission is to preserve and promote Asian Pacific culture through the arts, thereby, extending goodwill and enhancing cultural understanding. Alex and Raena are members of PASACAT's senior company and have participated in a multitude of performances around the community. Both individuals have a passion for the arts and are excited to be representing their rich culture with Mingei International Museum. Havana-born and based pianist Roberto Fonseca honors his deep Afro-Cuban roots while embracing modern music and showcasing what the future of Cuban music can be, thus becoming “one of the most exciting musicians in the new Cuban scene” (BBC Music). Fonseca, who has toured the world’s best venues with Buena Vista Social Club, is known for ripping up the rule book, entwining folkloric sounds with everything from jazz and classical music to rap, funk, reggaeton, and electronica.
