Create your own ceramic mug this season! Saturdays, November 22, 3-6 p.m. (build) & December 6, 2-4 p.m. (glaze) In this hands-on 2-part class, students will learn the slab-building method to create a functional ceramic mug from start to finish. We’ll cover rolling and cutting clay slabs, shaping and joining forms with the help of cylindrical supports, and attaching handles that are both sturdy and comfortable to hold. Students will also have the opportunity to personalize their mug with texture, carving, or underglaze decoration. By the end of class, each participant will have a unique handmade mug that will be glazed and fired for everyday use. This workshop is perfect for beginners, as well as those looking to refresh their clay handbuilding skills. Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after the last class. Beginners welcome. Learn to Warp & Weave! Saturday, November 15, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. (with 1 hour lunch break) Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a Rigid Heddle Loom and natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, Weaver & Dyer Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn how: a rigid heddle loom works; to plan a textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.); to warp a rigid heddle; to weave; to remove your handwoven; and to finish a textile. Nearly two years since their last San Diego show, Stick Men — featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, and Markus Reuter — return to the Bornemann Theatre in San Marcos for a special holiday weekend performance. Formed in 2007, this progressive rock supergroup is known for its bold sound built around touch-style instruments like the Chapman Stick and the custom U8 guitar. Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) anchors the trio with his legendary mastery of the Stick, while Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mr. Mister) fuses acoustic and electronic percussion, and Reuter adds depth and atmosphere through his innovative compositions. Together, the band’s members have contributed to records selling over 100 million copies worldwide. Opening the night is acclaimed Chapman Stick artist Tom Griesgraber, joined by guitarist Andre Cholmondeley of Project/Object. Artists enjoy painting in “the golden hour” because everything becomes progressively more interesting and exciting as shadows lengthen and one is forced to work quickly. Daily demonstrations in acrylic, oil, pastel, and watercolor will be short to allow students time to work. On the first day we will meet at Sunset Point Park on the grass. Subsequent locations will be based on students’ preferences. Please note that there may be locations without immediate access to restroom facilities. Please plan ahead. Since instruction is individual, artists of any level may participate and paint whatever type of scene they prefer. No matter how warm it is when you leave home, bring a jacket anyway. DIRECTIONS to Sunset Point Park: From I-5 take Sea World Drive West to Ingraham Street/West Mission Bay Drive. Take West Mission Drive. Once you are on West Mission Bay Drive, turn right at Dana Landing Road, and then immediately turn left into the Sunset Point Park parking lot. Materials: Students should bring their preferred mediums or buy recommended supplies that follow: Only buy what you plan to use. For those using pastels: Rembrandt, box of 90 or 180, or NuPastel, box of 96; Canson-brand pastel paper #429, 426, or 431 (quartered); foam core drawing board at least 1/2” larger than the size of paper you plan to use; four clips to hold paper; paper towels. For those using oils: French easel or lap easel; stretched canvas or canvas board, up to 16” x 20”; brushes #1, 2, 4, 6, 8 (two of each); odorless Gamsol thinner; small cup or jar; rags; small hand mirror (for seeing errors in reverse); a warm and cool tube of at least seven colors: Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black, Titanium White. Optional: Raw Umber, Scarlet Lake. For those using acrylics: at least the same range of colors as the oil painters. For those using watercolors: at least the same range of colors as the oil painters—but white is optional; flat or pointed brushes; watercolor blocks; chair or easel; Kleenex; 1/2 or 3/4” masking tape to crop image. Please be sure to bring an extra canvas or extra paper in case you have time to begin a second painting.
