  • The exciting young members of the Arod Quartet, based in Paris, first came to international attention when they won first prize at the 2015 Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition and the 2016 ARD International Music Competition. They arrive to San Diego this Spring! The program includes Mozart’s famous “Dissonance” String Quartet no. 19 in C Major; Bartok’s String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor, acknowledged as his first masterpiece; and Ravel’s only string quartet, a staple of the chamber music repertoire.   • Join Camille Bethune-Brown, Mingei Curator for a rich discussion on Beaded African Adornment. Beads are central to the lives of all African people, and an integral part of a multilayered communication system across cultural communities as well as a celebration of cultural heritage. African Adornment is community art where personal touches are infused in each object. You will come away with a deep understanding of the world around us and our shared experience that unites us all. This discussion coincides with the Museum's exhibition, COLORFUL CULTURE: AFRICAN BEADS and will take place in Mingei's new Theater.   • A Beautiful Way to Honor Your Loved Ones The Elizabeth Hospice Hosts Butterfly Release Ceremony on May 1 Everyone in the community is invited to attend Wings of Hope, hosted by The Elizabeth Hospice, on Sunday, May 1, 2022, from 1 to 3 p.m.. This event will take place at the California Center for the Arts, located at 340 N. Escondido Blvd in Escondido. Attendees will have the opportunity to honor and celebrate in a beautiful way the special people who have touched their lives. Admission is free. Registration is required by April 22, online at www.elizabethhospice.org/wings or by calling 760.796.3708. Attendees will receive a butterfly for release, listen to live music, hear uplifting messages from The Elizabeth Hospice’s grief support team and enjoy sweet treats.   • New Village Arts (NVA), North County’s cultural hub, launches its 20th Anniversary Season with a world premiere: "1222 Oceanfront: A Black Family Christmas," a new holiday musical written by San Diego playwright Dea Hurston and devised by Frankie Alicea-Ford, Kevin “Blax” Burroughs, Milena (Sellers) Phillips, and Dea Hurston, centering on the family holiday experience in a humorous and touching way. But seriously, how much drama can there be on Christmas Eve? "1222 Oceanfront: A Black Family Christmas" features a joyous mix of original holiday songs with traditional carols re-imagined.
