In an age of digital immediacy, what continues to draw us to books? Curt Sherman will share a selection of his one-of-a-kind artist books, alongside the sources that inspired them. Spanning topics from the history of the alphabet and "Katagami" (Japanese stencils) to Walt Whitman and the First World War, his works combine varied processes with text and poetry that reflect each theme. A former professor of design, interior design, and furniture design, Sherman taught for 35 years. He co-authored "Architecture and Interior Design: An Integrated History to the Present" (Prentice Hall, 2012), a standard text in the field. In retirement, he returned to an early interest in typography, studying at Bayside Press and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library Print Studio. His work has been exhibited widely, including the Athenaeum Juried Exhibition, and featured in the 2025 San Diego Book Arts Highlights publication. STRAUSS: "A Hero's Life" (Ein Heldenleben), Op. 40 The 2026-2027 season opens with Rafael Payare conducting the Orchestra in a concert celebrating the power of human imagination. Sofia Gubaidulina’s Poema-Skazka ("Fairy-Tale Poem") tells of a little piece of chalk that spends its days writing mathematical exercises but one evening takes on a life of its own, covering the blackboard with flowers and castles and fantasies, sacrificing itself for the power of imagination. Written in 1971 for a children’s program on Soviet radio, it accompanied a reading of a story by the 20th century Czech writer, Miloš Macourek. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24 is one of the most dramatic pieces he wrote in any form. The first movement has a thrilling tragic grandeur, an epic feeling that directly inspired Beethoven and many other composers who came after. Pianist Yefim Bronfman returns to Jacobs Music Center for this electrifying concerto. Of all Strauss’s tone poems, none is more sumptuously and gorgeously theatrical than Ein Heldenleben, “A Hero’s Life". It tells an outrageous story, at once tremendously grand and hilariously funny, filled with laughter and mockery. Lace up your running shoes and get ready to hit the boardwalk! Belmont Park’s Dipper Dash 5K presented by Fit returns to Mission Beach on Sunday, September 20, bringing together fitness, family fun, rescue pups and a full day at San Diego’s iconic beachfront amusement park. The morning kicks off at 8 a.m. with the Dipper Dash 5K, a chip-timed race that starts in the heart of Belmont Park before taking runners along the scenic Mission Beach Boardwalk and back to the park. At 9 a.m., the park’s youngest runners can get in on the fun with the Kids Loop, a safe, kid-friendly course held entirely within Belmont Park and designed for children ages 10 and under. And the fun doesn’t stop at the finish line! Every registered participant receives an Unlimited Ride & Play Wristband for all-day access to Belmont Park’s rides and attractions, along with a custom finisher medal, complimentary drink ticket and free event photography. Runners can celebrate afterward at Fit Social’s oceanfront after-party, featuring live DJs, wellness experiences, cold plunges and local vendors. This year’s Dipper Dash will also support The Animal Pad, a San Diego-based nonprofit dedicated to rescuing dogs from high-risk situations and finding them loving homes. The Animal Pad will be onsite with adoptable rescue dogs, giving participants the chance to meet some four-legged friends while learning more about fostering and adoption.
