Buddy Guy brings his 90th birthday celebration to The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park! At nearly 90 years old, he stands as one of the most influential guitarists in American music. As a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a pioneer of Chicago’s explosive West Side sound, Buddy Guy remains a guiding force for generations of rock and blues legends. The nine-time Grammy winner has also earned a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, 38 Blues Music Awards, the Billboard Century Award, the Presidential National Medal of Arts, and the Kennedy Center Honor. Rolling Stone ranks him #23 on its list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” underscoring his unmatched impact on modern music. Born in 1936 to a sharecropper’s family in rural Louisiana, Guy arrived in Chicago in 1957 and went on to reshape the sound of the electric guitar through groundbreaking work with Chess Records and influential recordings of his own. His recent achievements include a 2019 Grammy win for "The Blues Is Alive and Well" and the acclaimed PBS American Masters documentary "Buddy Guy: The Blues Chase the Blues Away." Today, as he celebrates 90 years, Buddy Guy remains an American music icon – one of the last living architects of the electric blues tradition. The Spreckels Organ Society and San Diego Civic Organist Raúl Prieto Ramírez presents thrilling organ solos and a concert version of The Phantom of the Opera with soprano Caroline Nelms and tenor Cole Tornberg, showcasing the Spreckels Organ – the largest open-air musical instrument in the world! Always free and open to the public – this concert with spooky lights, will also include eerie projections. Guests are also encouraged to come dressed in costume and take a photo on stage with the artists after the concert. Set in the beautiful backdrop of Balboa Park’s open-air venue, where performances bring a one-of-a-kind experience for guests. The elevated music venue brings world-class artists for San Diegans and visitors to enjoy for free. Parking in Balboa Park is free after 6:00 p.m. The Spreckels Organ Society is a nonprofit organization that curates concerts and performances at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, located in the heart of Balboa Park. They also host weekly concerts every Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Through the generosity of the City of San Diego, the weekly Spreckels Organ Society concerts are presented at no charge in accordance with the 1915 Deed of Gift, whereby the brothers John and Adolph Spreckels gave the Spreckels Organ and Pavilion to the City of San Diego. As a recording and touring artist, James Taylor has touched people with his warm baritone voice and distinctive style of guitar-playing for more than 50 years, while setting a precedent to which countless young musicians have aspired. Over the course of his celebrated songwriting and performing career, he has sold more than 100 million albums, earning gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards since the release of his self-titled debut album in 1968. In 2015, he released "Before This World," the first-ever #1 album of his illustrious career. James has won multiple GRAMMY Awards, has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll and the prestigious Songwriters Halls of Fame and in February 2006, The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences selected him its MUSICARES Person of the Year. He was also awarded the distinguished Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government and the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama in 2012. In November of 2015, James was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Nation's highest civilian honor and in December of 2016 he received the Kennedy Center Honors, which are presented annually to individuals who have enriched American culture by distinguished achievement in the performing arts. In early 2020 he released "Break Shot," a deeply personal and authentic audio-only memoir detailing his first 21 years. He also released his newest album, American Standard, his 19th studio album, which earned him the 2021 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album and gave him the honor of being the first artist to have a Billboard Top 10 album in each of the past six decades.
