This September, Ballet Collective San Diego is proud to present "RESONANCE," a melodic evening of diverse contemporary ballet works by local choreographers Tylor Bradshaw, Reka Gyulai, Holly Meacham, Whitney Edwards, and Emily Miller with Guest Choreographer Holly Curran (Metropolitan Opera NYC) choreographed to a wide range of musical offerings, with special guests The Hausmann Quartet and other musical collaborators. "RESONANCE" touches the pulse of what is important to each choreographer and dancer—the rapture in hearing music that is close to us, what is real and honest between two people sharing space, and the power of many bodies breathing together as one. July 14–18 (5 days, 15 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio Sculptural relief combines the dimensionality of sculpture with the compositional demands of drawing to create an exciting artistic challenge. In this course we will work from a model in order to study the way a portrait can be compressed from full dimensionality into low- and mid-relief. Materials: Clay and boards included with the materials fee paid to instructor on first day of class. Max students: 12 $250/270 + $28–60 materials fee paid to instructor ($28–40 for clay (depending on type selected); $20 for boards [optional]). Written over the course of three years, Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 is a monumental two-part declaration of faith that reveals the composer’s wide-ranging influences, from folk song to mythology and philosophy. This vastly expansive work is Mahler’s ode to nature, progressing in ever wider circles from the intimacy of flowers and meadows, to a colossal vision of humanity, and the splendor of the cosmos and its Creator. Perhaps no other symphony of Mahler’s so well embodies his famous declaration to Sibelius, in Sibelius’s own account: "Die Symphonie muss sein wie die Welt, Sie muss alles umfassen." ("A symphony must be like the world. It must embrace everything.") World-renowned mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill will make her San Diego Symphony debut, conducted by Music Director Rafael Payare, for these final concerts of this historic season.
