Grief is a universal experience, yet so many myths and misconceptions surround it. It can be isolating, confusing, and deeply personal, but it’s also something we don’t have to navigate alone. This workshop takes an educational approach to debunk common grief myths while creating space for personal reflection. What to expect: We’ll open our time together with a bit of grounding breathwork, and a guided meditation to help us sense where we may be storing emotions in our bodies. Then, we’ll settle in as Clinical Psychologist Heidi Rodenberger, Psy.D., explores common grief myths and coping strategies: Understanding Grief: Moving beyond common beliefs —what grief really looks like in different situations. Debunking Grief Myths: Why “just give it time” and “stay busy” may not be the best advice. Healthy vs. Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms: Practical self-care strategies to navigate loss. Please bring a journal. After Dr. Heidi’s talk, we’ll take time to reflect and write about how grief myths have shaped our experiences and how we can use this insight to support our well-being. We’ll close with a brief group discussion for those who wish to share—participation is always optional! This gathering is a judgment-free, open-hearted space for learning, sharing, and finding connection in the realities of grief. We will be doing small to medium-size loose studies. We will keep the watercolor simple and fresh. We focus on the process more than the finished product, and we encourage play and experimentation. This is a great technique to learn for travel sketchbooks, greeting cards, or adding a little custom painting to your scrapbook, journal, or website. You will be able to finish several paintings. Lori will walk you through each project, and she will demonstrate and show samples, all in a very relaxed atmosphere. We will be drawing from observation of photos and from real life. We may have a guest artist join us for one lesson. This class is set at an intermediate level. You should have some experience with drawing and painting before taking this class. MATERIALS: Pens: I recommend Faber-Castell PITT or Micron waterproof, black. There’s a pack of four Faber-Castell PITT Artist Pens that have nib sizes superfine, fine, medium, and brush-pen. If you have a variety of nib sizes in another brand of acid free, waterproof pens, feel free to use them. (Note: Be sure it is not the four-pack that has thick pens used for calligraphy.) Paper: one 9” x 12” watercolor pad. (From 90 lb. to 140 lb. is good. My favorite brand is Arches, cold or hot press, but others are fine.) Watercolor: If you have watercolors, just use what you have. If you want to buy some, you can get the Prang-brand, 16-standard-color set or splurge and buy tubes of Daniel Smith or Winsor & Newton. If you want a set for travel, get a travel Winsor & Newton set, with professional colors. Brushes: The sets usually come with a brush. I recommend that you get additional brushes (round #2, 6, and 8) and a flat, wash brush (½”). Feel free to set up any pens or paper you would like to try. If you would like to get a travel water brush, Niji is the best brand. Misc.: glue stick, scissors, two water containers, spray bottle, water mister, watercolor well palette. (It’s a palette with little cups to hold the paint.) Optional: one Uni-ball, Signo white fine-tip pen or white gel pen, Speedball sketching project set, and black waterproof India ink. Shelter to Soldier is excited to announce its Inaugural Salute to Paws 5K and Gratitude Festival for Dogs on Saturday, November 16, at Naval Training Center (NTC) Park in Liberty Station (2455 Cushing Rd, San Diego, CA 92106). This fun-filled event aims to raise funds for Shelter to Soldier’s life-changing programs, which rescue dogs from local shelters and train them to become service animals for post-9/11 veterans suffering from PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury, Military Sexual Trauma, and other injuries associated with traumatic service experiences. Come make a wish! A FREE, Family event. The ribbon cutting for the butterfly maze at Chollas Lake will be from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday March 22nd celebrating Spring Equinox. It will be a Sharing... meaning that you bring something to share. That could be food, beverage or you play music or plant a flower in the butterfly garden or something else… The name of this interactive installation is "The Wishing Machine." It is an extension of my body of work: Urban Succession. It is a maze made of raised planter boxes that are filled with butterfly flowers. The center of the maze is a wishing well. Around 300 students from Patrick Henry High researched the ecosystem of Chollas Lake and illustrated their studies onto the sides of the boxes. I hand made the bricks of the wishing well and painted the words wishing well in the 6 main languages of City Heights. (Under the roof is “The Secret Sky”) Many people and organizations have collaborated in the making of this project. Lumber Cycle donated the wood, Biology Through Art donated the paint, and City Farmers Nursery donated the soil.
