Katie Ruiz is a Xicana artist who resides in San Diego. She was raised in Southern California and Northern Arizona. Ruiz is a figure painter and sculptor best known for her blanket series in which she portrays couples standing or lying under colorful Mexican blankets. She has a strong connection with nature and often uses natural objects like rocks, shells, leaves and sticks in her weavings and sculptures. Ruiz is dedicating the piece to another artist who recently passed away, Yolanda López—one of the most important Chicana/o/x artists working in California over the past five decades. Born in 1942 and raised in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood, López was based for much of her career in the Bay Area, where she passed at the age of 79. She is best known for her iconic Virgen de Guadalupe series, a seminal oeuvre in Chicanx feminist art she produced during the 1970s, which became some of the most-widely circulated images of a Chicano artist of her generation. López was also an activist and educator celebrated for her role in the Chicano art movement.

  • "Loving" is the musical collaboration of David Parry, Lucas Henderson and Jesse Henderson. The band formed by way of a long-distance recording project (Victoria – Toronto) that resulted in the creation of their debut self-titled EP. After the unexpected embrace of this work, the band reconvened in Victoria, BC to begin playing live shows and work on new material. Following in the path of their debut EP, "If l am only my thoughts" was home recorded and represents a deeper exploration of the band’s creative process - a process marked by an appreciation for the generative limitations of recording to tape. The resulting album constructs a warm and dreamy sonic landscape kept adrift by existentially oriented lyrics and an unspecified all-encompassing sense of nostalgia. Between the recording and completion of "If l am only my thoughts", the band has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, supporting prominent artists including Alice Phoebe Lou, Crumb and Still Woozy. For all live shows, "Loving" is joined by Keenan Mittag-Degala (Elan Noon) on drums. “Nihilist Kite Flyer”, the first single from the upcoming LP, is slated for release May 16, 2019. The full album will be released via Last Gang Records. This is a 21+ event SOCIALS: Facebook Twitter Instagram
  • Where The Bombpops had a Fear of Missing Out on their 2017 debut full-length, their highly anticipated follow up shows what happens when you’re too involved—with booze, bad situations, and behavior that’s unsustainable at best and destructive at worst. This is Death in Venice Beach (Fat Wreck Chords, March 13), the comedown after the high, when clarity pierces the morning-after haze. It’s right there in the title, an allusion to Thomas Mann’s celebrated novella about the price of an artistic life. The Bombpops co-founder and singer-guitarist Jen Razavi read it as the band debated titles for their second full-length. “It’s a cautionary tale to those that want to become an artist,” she says, “but it’s also really comforting to artists who can’t help or necessarily contain being who they are and what they’re drawn to.” What draws The Bombpops hasn’t changed: highly melodic punk with big guitars, vocal harmonies, and the SoCal sound that inspired Razavi, co-founder and singer-guitarist Poli van Dam, bassist Neil Wayne, and drummer Josh Lewis. But the more light-hearted skate punk of Fear of Missing Out has a serrated edge on Death in Venice Beach, as Razavi and van Dam explore darker themes—even though the songs are catchier than ever.
