SDBG's Fall Festival connects visitors with harvest plants and autumn traditions, alike. From pumpkins and scarecrows to Halloween and Day of the Dead, the Garden decorates and celebrates the changing colors of nature and cooler temperatures in the air.
Enjoy live music, hands-on crafts, fall-themed classes, and artist Katie Ruiz’s Dia de los Muertos ofrenda (see details below)! Bring items from home to contribute to a community altar to commemorate loved ones.

El Festival de Otoño de SDBG conecta a sus visitantes con plantas de temporada y tradiciones de otoño. Desde calabazas y espantapájaros hasta Halloween y el Día de los Muertos, el jardín decora y celebra los colores cambiantes de la naturaleza y las temperaturas más frescas en el aire. To celebrate Día de los Muertos, SDBG has commissioned artist Katie Ruiz to create an ofrenda that will open to the public on October 23. Katie Ruiz is a Xicana artist who resides in San Diego. She was raised in Southern California and Northern Arizona. Ruiz is a figure painter and sculptor best known for her blanket series in which she portrays couples standing or lying under colorful Mexican blankets. She has a strong connection with nature and often uses natural objects like rocks, shells, leaves and sticks in her weavings and sculptures.
Ruiz is dedicating the piece to another artist who recently passed away, Yolanda López—one of the most important Chicana/o/x artists working in California over the past five decades. Born in 1942 and raised in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood, López was based for much of her career in the Bay Area, where she passed at the age of 79. She is best known for her iconic Virgen de Guadalupe series, a seminal oeuvre in Chicanx feminist art she produced during the 1970s, which became some of the most-widely circulated images of a Chicano artist of her generation. López was also an activist and educator celebrated for her role in the Chicano art movement.
Para una celebración especial del Día de los Muertos, SDBG ha contratado a la artista Katie Ruiz para crear una ofrenda que abrirá al público a partir del 23 de octubre. Katie Ruiz es una artista, pintora y escultora Xicana que vive en San Diego y es reconocida por su serie de mantas coloridas. Esta ofrenda se dedicará a Yolanda López – una de las artistas Chicana/o/x más importantes que ha trabajado en California durante las últimas cinco décadas, así como una activista y educadora célebre por su papel en el movimiento del arte Chicano. El Jardín también albergará un altar comunitario donde el público podrá traer artículos para conmemorar a sus seres queridos.
San Diego Botanic Garden
After several years of deliberation, the governing board of the Quail Botanical Gardens Foundation decided to change the name Quail Botanical Gardens to San Diego Botanic Garden. The new name went into effect on September 12, 2009 at our 10th Annual Gala in the Gardens. A name can be very significant; and to change a name that has become known and loved is not an easy task. We believe that the new name will bring continued growth, ensuring the future of this Garden for generations to come. A significant number of people who visit the Garden are doing so for the very first time. A common response is a pleasant surprise, or even amazement, at all the Garden has to offer. For many, the name Quail Botanical Gardens was all they knew before their visit--unfortunately, it did not set a high level of expectation for the experience and the word "Quail" added some confusion. An important reason for changing the name is the belief that potential visitors would expect more and thus be more likely to visit a public garden called the San Diego Botanic Garden. A name that lays stake to a wider region helps generate supporters from the greater area. Donors, whether individual or corporate, will always play an important role in ensuring the Garden's future. The name San Diego Botanic Garden sets a higher level of expectation and perception of importance. These are important matters for cultivating donors and in grant applications. But for those of us who know the Garden as Quail Botanical Gardens it will not change a thing. Explore our gardens, enjoy restful vistas, flowering trees, majestic palms, and the nation’s largest bamboo collection. Thanks to our mild climate, plants from all over the world thrive here. Our diverse topography provides a variety of microclimates giving the visitor a sensation of going from a desert environment to a tropical rainforest, all within 35 acres. Located 30 minutes north of San Diego in Encinitas, California, San Diego Botanic Garden features numerous exhibits, including rare bamboo groves, desert gardens, a tropical rainforest, California native plants, Mediterranean climate landscapes, succulent gardens, an herb garden, firesafe landscaping, a subtropical fruit garden, and native coastal sage natural areas. In June of 2009, we opened the Hamilton Children's Garden, the largest interactive children's garden on the West Coast.
