  • For the past 12 years, the San Diego Italian Film Festival has taken you to virtual journeys along with our protagonists, experiencing the passion, love, comedy, despair, and hope of life. But the SDIFF is about more than just movies. It is about identity, history and a shared appreciation of Italian culture and great cinema– in a word, it is about community. As part of the September monthly series of the San Diego italian Film Festival is the film Volevo Nascondermi (Hidden Away) directed by Giorgio Diritti. Synopsis: Toni, an orphan of Italian origin, is deported from Switzerland to Italy, where he lives in abject poverty on the banks of river Po. Physically deformed and mentally disordered, Toni is marginalized and humiliated by a society hateful of any suspicion of divergence. Ultimately, he finds refuge in painting, channeling his bitterness and dire need for acceptance. A gripping biopic featuring painter Antonio Ligabue that exalts art’s redemptive powers, while praising the values of diversity. In Italian with English subtitles. • From San Diego Weekend Arts Events: Bach Collegium, under the direction of Ruben Valenzuela, will kick off their new season with some early works from Bach and Handel — both written in 1707. Handel's "Dixit Dominus" ("The Lord said") is reported to be his earliest surviving, dated autograph, or handwritten manuscript. And Bach's "Christ lag in Todes Banden" ("Christ lay in death's bonds") is said to be one of his earliest church cantatas, based on a Martin Luther hymn. Valenzuela has titled this season "Total Sound Explosion," which is a nod to the drama and intensity of these works. They'll also be kicking off a professional recording project with this show, so if you want your applause forever burned into the musical archives, show up. Side note: the performance will be held at All Soul's Church, home of the stunning botanical stained glass wall by iconic regional artist James Hubbell. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the organizer: Bach Collegium of San Diego presents: 1707: A SONIC YOUTH One set Rome on musical fire, while the other deepened his musical roots at home in Thuringia.
