We are pleased to announce our "Faculty & Staff Exhibition" in the Palmer Gallery at the Athenaeum Art Center. The heart of the Athenaeum’s School of the Arts is our faculty, whose knowledge and expertise embrace all aspects of fine art. In this exhibition of our teaching artists’ current work, viewers will enjoy the broad range of mediums and techniques that characterize our faculty’s versatility, from painting to book arts, printmaking, ceramics, illustration, painting, and beyond. Their dedication to lifelong learning and exploration continues to inspire students who take classes in both our Logan Heights and La Jolla studios. The Faculty & Staff Exhibition reflects the Athenaeum’s ongoing commitment to fine arts education and its role as a vibrant cultural hub in San Diego’s art community. In addition to faculty, members of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library staff who are artists are also presenting their work, reflecting the shared creativity and passion for the arts that infuse every part of our organization. Guided by her lifelong belief in "beauty and nature above all else," the New Jersey native and clinical social worker turned her beach walks along Silver Strand into a monumental grassroots movement. As a founder of the Silver Strand Beautification Project (SSBP), Liza united local residents, city leaders, state agencies, and the U.S. Navy to revitalize public spaces. Her vision and tenacity led to landmark achievements, including the award-winning Nature’s Bridge to Discovery interactive trail, the undergrounding of coastal utilities, five landscaped highway medians, the unique Silver Strand bus shelters, and the creation of Grand Caribe Shoreline Park. Today, Liza continues her advocacy, inspiring the community to protect and preserve these scenic coastal treasures for future generations. David R. Landon is a native of Guilford, Connecticut, who graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1975 with a BS in Business Administration. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1976 and retired as a Captain in 2006 after 30 years on active duty. He has commanded HSL-51 in Atsugi Japan, HSL-41 in San Diego California, Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility in San Diego and Naval Base Coronado, which included NAS North Island, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, NALF San Clemente Island, the Silver Strand Training Complex, La Posta Mountain Warfare Training Complex and OLF Imperial Beach. Since retiring from the Navy, David has worked as the Chief Operating Officer and co-owner of Priority Solutions, a permanent placement- recruiting firm and as a Program Manager and leadership advisor for Scientific Applications International Corporation (SAIC). The 22nd annual San Diego Food + Wine Festival (SDFW) returns Nov. 1–8, 2026, welcoming attendees for eight days of cultural events celebrating Southern California and Baja with participating chefs, winemakers, spirits producers, and culinary experts from across the country and county joining us on the San Diego Bay shoreline. TuYo Theatre is proud to announce the World Premiere of “Our Lady of the San Diego Convention Center" by Mario Vega. Running from September 11th through October 18th, 2026 at venues across San Diego County, TuYo invites audiences to experience this heartfelt and inspirational story based on the playwright's real-life experiences working as a youthcare worker at the San Diego Convention Center in 2021. “Our Lady of the San Diego Convention Center" is Vega’s second world premiere production with TuYo, the first being the immersive musical “Pásale Pásele.” The production also follows TuYo’s “Everything You Need To Know About Abortion In One Hour Or Less,” an educational story about women’s reproductive rights, and the spooky and immersive sold-out run of “La Llorona On The Blue Line.” TuYo Theatre is excited to collaborate with Casa Familiar Vega’s "Our Lady of the San Diego Convention Center" centers the honest experiences of immigration with care and humor, capturing the stories of these migrant girls and encouraging audiences to have a conversation about not just migration, but the consequences of borders on children and our responsibility as human beings to take care of each other.

The Annual Afghan Tea Party is the House of Afghanistan's signature lawn celebration — a public, family-friendly festival of Afghan culture, hospitality, food, music, poetry, art, and community. Bring a blanket, settle in, and expect a warm Afghan welcome. The name is a tribute to something deeply familiar in Afghan life: the way tea brings people together. Across Afghan homes and gatherings, tea is more than a drink. It is a gesture of welcome, a reason to sit, a pause before a story, and often the beginning of a long conversation. That spirit of hospitality is what inspired the name. But this is not a formal tea service. It is a full afternoon of live programming on the Prado lawn, created for Afghan families, neighbors, friends, and visitors of all backgrounds. From the stage, guests will experience live Afghan music and poetry — read aloud, then unpacked, so every guest leaves understanding why these verses have endured for centuries. There will be storytelling for children and a live demonstration of ta'arof — the intricate, affectionate ritual of Afghan courtesy that no visitor forgets. Guests will also go deeper into the culture itself: an introduction to Afghan food — what's on the table, how it's made, and what each dish means. Between programs, the lawn opens up: tea is poured, food is served, and vendor booths offer Afghan food, clothing, books, and artisan goods. The afternoon also carries a ceremonial heart. The house will present its inaugural Afghan Spirit Award, honoring an Afghan American whose life embodies the values of our people — resilience, bravery, leadership, and hospitality — along with a Community Service Award recognizing extraordinary service to the diaspora. For non-Afghan guests, it is an open invitation to experience Afghan culture in a warm, accessible, and joyful setting.
