We are pleased to announce our "Faculty & Staff Exhibition" in the Palmer Gallery at the Athenaeum Art Center. The heart of the Athenaeum’s School of the Arts is our faculty, whose knowledge and expertise embrace all aspects of fine art. In this exhibition of our teaching artists’ current work, viewers will enjoy the broad range of mediums and techniques that characterize our faculty’s versatility, from painting to book arts, printmaking, ceramics, illustration, painting, and beyond. Their dedication to lifelong learning and exploration continues to inspire students who take classes in both our Logan Heights and La Jolla studios. The Faculty & Staff Exhibition reflects the Athenaeum’s ongoing commitment to fine arts education and its role as a vibrant cultural hub in San Diego’s art community. In addition to faculty, members of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library staff who are artists are also presenting their work, reflecting the shared creativity and passion for the arts that infuse every part of our organization. The exhibition can be viewed in the Catherine and Robert Palmer Gallery at the Athenaeum Art Center (1955 Julian Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113) during open gallery hours, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and every second Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m., during the Barrio Art Crawl, and by appointment. "HEARTMOOR" is a dark romantic opera that blends raw performance, dance, multimedia, music, singing, absurdist theater, and pop into a hallucinatory sensory experience. Performed in both English and Spanish, the work moves through fairy-tale and telenovela logic while exploring love, desire, revenge, guilt, transformation, and queer becoming through nonlinear storytelling and surreal imagery. Part irreverent comedy and part reflective drama, "HEARTMOOR" creates a dreamlike world that draws from performance art, video art, improvisational dance, and experimental theater while remaining deeply rooted in border culture and personal mythology. This special production of "HEARTMOOR" features collaborations with distinguished guest artists whose work has helped shape San Diego's contemporary theater and dance landscape. Experience the Creative Heart of Talmadge: Artist Tour Returns April 12, 2026 Did you know that the historic neighborhood of Talmadge is home to a massive community of creators? On Sunday, April 12, the Talmadge Artist Tour returns, offering a rare look at the sheer volume of talent tucked away in this San Diego gem. This free, self-guided event features 13 local artists showcasing their work in various locations throughout the neighborhood. From fine painting and intricate glasswork to handmade pottery and jewelry, there is an incredible range of art to discover. This year also features a special guest from the Spanish Village Art Center, known for unique functional art. Come meet the makers, talk shop, and support the local arts scene. The San Diego History Center presents "America 250: San Diego 1776–2026," a major new exhibition in the heart of Balboa Park. Created as part of the nationwide commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, the exhibition explores San Diego’s history through 100 objects drawn from the History Center’s collections and exclusive private loans. From Kumeyaay cultural materials and historic transportation artifacts to architectural models, artwork, clothing, and objects tied to social movements and the military, the exhibition traces the region’s evolution from a Spanish settlement to today’s vibrant binational community. Developed in collaboration with history students from University of California San Diego and San Diego State University, the exhibition highlights fresh perspectives and original research that connect San Diego’s local stories to the broader American experience. The Art Glass Guild located in Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park will be hosting their Spring Patio Show and Sale on Mother's Day weekend. The patio and Studio 25 will be filled with local San Diego glass artists. See beautiful art representing many techniques, including blown, fused, torch, stained, cast, etched and mosaic art. A 5-lesson advanced online course in Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) for learners with prior knowledge of the language seeking to deepen their reading, speaking, and grammatical awareness. Each session uses authentic Sephardi and contemporary Ladino texts — including folklore, poetry, fables, and song — to build vocabulary and develop fluency. Grammar topics include verb tenses, moods, pronoun systems, and the contrast between indicative and subjunctive. Taught by Esther Rute, who holds a BA in Semitic Philology and two MAs in Jewish History and Spanish Studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is a certified language teacher, External Advisor to the National Authority for Ladino (ANL), and Deputy Editor of Aki Yerushalayim.
