  • SK Kakraba is a renowned virtuoso on the Ghanaian gyil, a xylophone with gourd resonators punctured with holes covered in the silk of spider cocoons. This arrangement produces the distinctive buzzing sound of the instrument, rich in melodic and percussive qualities. Kakraba descends from a long line of gyil masters who have traditionally played sacred music reserved for funerals and religious observances. This will be the first-ever San Diego performance by this artist, who is possibly “the world’s greatest xylophone player” (La Weekly). Concert is presented by the Center for World Music and the Mingei Museum.
