Over the past decade, artist Math Bass has developed a lexicon of symbols in the series Newz!—letters, bodily forms, architectural fragments, animals, bones—arranged in a variety of scores, each symbol an empty space of meaning, filled in by the context in which it finds itself. Repetition of these symbols, rather than codifying them into one solid signification, exposes the difference at the heart of each iteration; there is always a gap in meaning, something unnamable left out of and left over in the viewer’s reading—a jouissance. It is this gap in the symbolic where Lee Edelman states queerness lies—not as an easily categorized liberal identity but as a process of unmaking and undoing that leaves (gendered) subjectivity as we know it in question. That these symbols are familiar only heightens our unsettling; the negative space of these compositions, a major player in Bass’s practice, adds further to the gap. We are pleased to announce the dates for the 26th Athenaeum Summer Festival, a series of four concerts that will feature virtuoso pianist Gustavo Romero. Continuing a beloved tradition, this summer Gustavo Romero will celebrate and focus on the piano music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, including his preludes, etude-tableaux variations, and sonatas, accompanied by select pieces by his Russian contemporaries. For 25 years, the Athenaeum has presented unforgettable festivals featuring Gustavo Romero performing the complete piano repertoire of a specific composer. Whether you have been with us all 25 years or have yet to experience the wonder of this artist—who plays from memory—you will not want to miss our upcoming 26th Summer Festival. Romero, a native San Diegan, with a heritage in Guadalajara, first performed at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library as a young boy, and it was with him that the Athenaeum planned its first Summer Festival in 1999, the organization's 100th anniversary. Each year, Romero chooses composers to study in depth, sharing the full range of their artistry. Dinners will be offered at the Athenaeum after the first and last concerts (July 6 and 27), providing a unique opportunity for concertgoers to socialize, meet Mr. Romero, and share a delicious meal, catered by Girard Gourmet. "Ostentatious Oasis" – A New Exhibition by Dave Kinsey Confronts Humanity’s Delusions of Permanence. Oolong Gallery is pleased to present Ostentatious Oasis, a solo exhibition by San Diego based painter Dave Kinsey, opening March 15th and running through April 15th. In his first solo exhibition in four years, this body of work—a continuation of Kinsey’s ongoing Existential Synthesis series—confronts humanity’s precarious relationship with nature and the self-imposed isolation that blinds us to its realities. For this exhibition, Kinsey employs disjointed marble figures as metaphors for human arrogance— symbolizing illusions of purity and permanence that fracture under the weight of our own actions. White marble, historically tied to wealth and power, becomes a symbol of hubris, crumbling in contrast to the consequences of human advancement: wars that displace, disasters that devastate, and relentless exploitation that erodes the natural world. How do we as humans coexist or even adapt within these uncanny and divergent spaces? What will become of our modern way of living that seems at odds with the natural rhythm of our planet?" the artist asks. Set within surreal, urbane environments, the figures reflect humanity’s disconnection from nature, insulated within artificial comforts that distort our perception of reality. Through deep earth tones and fluid, dreamlike compositions, Kinsey invites viewers to confront these fragile constructs and reimagine humanity’s role—not as masters of the Earth, but as beings inextricably bound to it. Influenced by a pivotal trip to Florence in 2022, Kinsey draws upon the grandeur of Renaissance sculpture while subverting its ideals through a surrealist lens. This synthesis of historical reverence and contemporary existential inquiry defines Ostentatious Oasis, bridging past and present in an urgent reflection on civilization’s fragility. The San Diego Re-Entry Roundtable: Education Subcommittee invites you to explore how individuals in the reentry population successfully pursue higher education and vocational careers. Attendees will learn through students’ lived experiences as they share their personal journeys and discuss the potential for high school completion all the way through to earning a doctoral degree. Lucas Smith, celebrated award-winning artist and resident of San Diego, California, showcases his latest solo exhibition “Beyond the Boundaries: An Exploration in Abstract Art” at Studio 21 in April. This collection is an invitation to experience nature’s beauty through abstraction—to feel its presence, energy, and serenity in a way that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. It explores the dynamic interplay of color, texture and movement. In the past year, Lucas’s work has been juried in dozens of shows in some of San Diego’s best galleries and was awarded Best of Show, two 1st place, two 2nd place, Juror’s Choice, three Honorable Mentions and People’s Choice. He is a juried member of the Professional Artist group and is resident of Studio 2 at Art on 30th in North Park. Lucas is the Assistant Director of the San Diego Watercolor Society’s 45th International Exhibition and a member of North Coastal Art Gallery, OMA Artist Alliance, Sargent Art Group, and Foothills Art Association. He also recently launched Art Connect, a Facebook group that links artists to opportunities while encouraging collaboration and mutual support. Lucas’s art continues flying off the easel with 55 paintings sold in the past year through solo exhibitions, juried gallery shows, and private commissions. His work is now part of collections across California and the U.S., including New York, Connecticut, North Carolina, Illinois, Missouri, Oregon, Arizona, and internationally in Norway. For several decades, Village Arts Outreach has served as a crucial artistic outreach for the Art Center at Spanish Village in Balboa Park.
